If its THAT big of a deal to him then he should call his insurance and say something fell of a truck in front of him on the highway. Then he can pay his deductible, if he's mad that his deductible is a grand, then its high fault its a grand and not 20 bucks. If you feel bad enough to help pay for it, offer to pay his deductible, after he shows you proof of how much it is.

I'd bet any money you gave to him stayed in his pocket though, and didn't go to fixing the car.

edit: You could tell him you want him to pay for a new silencer since his car managed to damage yours

Interestingly, someone else, or perhaps multiple cars, ran over my silencer and completely flattened it. I tossed it in the trash, never found out who ran over it.
