There are two generations of second generation MR2 -- the '91 - '92 cars and the '93 - '95 cars. The '91 - '92 cars had a reputation for abruptly losing the back end at the limit (sound familiar to anyone? ); the '93+ cars incorporated changes to the rear suspension geometry to address this.

I don't know if anyone's figured out how to tame the '91 - '92 cars in the interim, but unless they have, I'd stay away from them in favor of the rarer '93+ ones.
Steve, do you know Dave Ely? With the silver MR2 out on the peninsula (lic. plate some variation of "quicksilver")? He tracks that car. I'm not sure what year it is, though.

What about an old Supra or RX-7? I'd stick w/ NA for a track toy.

They're not Japanese, but you could probably pick up various Porsches in your price range, too, and I'm sure they'd be fun on the track.

I would reccommend the MR2 or a Spec Miata as mentioned above... I know I had a blast tracking my '93 MR2 even though its a NA with 135 measely HP. Having tons of traction with a mid engine car is great!

Also, the Spec E30 BMW class just opened up not too long ago... How about one of those?

Nope, don't know him.

I'd stay away -- while 924s / 944s aren't particularly trouble-prone, when you do have to do work on them, it's generally very time-consuming and/or expensive.

I like the MR2 idea, but the newest spider is what I would choose, like a miata, but without the stigma

What stigma? Seriously, if you can drive a Miata fast you get a lot more respect than if you can drive a 997 "reasonably well". At least, you do among the folks I hang out with at the track. YMMV, I suppose.

As for the new Toyota, you've got to be kidding. Where is the community of people and the supply of go-fast hardware and skill for that car? Have you ever even seen one out at the track? I never have. Compare that with all the cumulative years of experience at honing the Miata for track duty.

miata is the obvious choice, or an E30... thats what I would do...

although I want to be a little more creative..
Preparing a FWD 1st Gen DSM for the track would be fun. I used to own one and kick myself all the time for selling it

These pics should help you get over the Miata's "gayness".

If that doesn't work, a trip out to autocross and a testdrive will also do a lot to change your opinion of them.
