As everyone else has recommended... Miata.

Get over your insecurities regarding the car and I guarantee you'll have a blast throwing around a lightweight roadster through the corners. Fun to drive, reliable, CHEAP parts. Keep in mind that for a track car, you'll need to factor in high wear items into your budget (tires, pads, rotors).
Naw just borrow Gideon's Elise and you'll want to get one over a miata

My choice would be a Miata. You could also get a 240SX...but I'd rather have a modded miata for the track.

And you did say this is for the track right? So it'll be either in your garage or going to the track...so I don't see why the Miata would be a problem for the street (don't worry, I wouldn't be caught driving one on the street either, cept the next mx-5's). Bottom line is that car is fun and can be fast for a really low price.

Is this gonna be strictly a track car? Or you gonna use it for canyons and occasional street use? Because I get the idea that it's not going to be solely a track car from some of your responses.

s14 for roadrace and drift. easy to make power even with the KA24de and you can drop in the venerable SR20.

Maita is a good choice if you can ever get the fact that its a car that was voted #1 car for a homosexual.... the car handles great. lightweight and can be turboed or SC.
Except people at the race track don't give a shit what you drive, jsut how fast you drive it.

Very very true.

I actually think it's more of a slap in the face to pass high end sportscars in cars that aren't "supposed" to be faster.

I'll stop by the used Miata dealer this weekend and take a closer look. Thanks for all the comments!

When I decided that I didn't feel safe tracking my S2000 any more, I bought a Spec Miata. It's easy (after runoffs in a month or so) to pick up fully-prepared, competitive, used SMs for around $10,000. Upwards of $20,000 gets you the same car, but with a "pro motor" (meaning more power but spec legal). And if you're looking only for a track toy, rather than a race car, it's possible, with a little work and patience, to get a turbo Miata for not much more than $10,000.

Miatas are an absolute hoot to drive on the track, if properly set up. In addition, they have the virtues of being very reliable, and there is an abundance of spare parts out there.

How about early 90's MR2? It was all about getting crazy power out of it in Gran Turismo 1
