Redline Time Attack Part 2
This past sunday was the Redline Time Attack finals at buttonwillow. Configuration was CW13, a good and fun configuration for the S2000. Having just installed a new J's Racing Bumpsteer kit and raising my car by about 8-9mm, i really wanted to see how my car would perform.
StinkyS2k Mods:
-AEM V2
-Ce28 17x9 +63 all around
-255/40/17 Falken Azenis
-Ebay wing
-T1r 70RT titanium exhaust
-Recardo bucket seat
-Tein SRC
-J's Racing bumpsteer kit
-Mugen Hardtop (removal of softtop)
-Hawk Blue pads front/Cobalt Spec VX rear
These mods put me well into production class even though i'm not even running r compounds yet, doh
.
Maxrev is running pretty much unchanged with a few minor mods since the last time he broke the 2 minute mark with his very mildly modded S2K.
The way the time attack works:
-2 Practice sessions
-2 Time attack sessions
It does not matter what time you hit during your practice sessions. Only your time attack sessions count towards your standings. The best time from either time attack sessions, 1 or 2, will be used to determine class winners.
Chris from redline was not kidding, competition was fierce this year! Especially in street class. The last time i ran buttonwillow cw13 with my car was back in may and i managed to pull a 2:10. I was thinking that most street cars would be hitting 2:06's at best by seeing how the competition was last year. Well i was proven wrong. The AWD guys dominated this class with the Robispec Evo hitting 1:59.7 on street tires (thats right, STREET TIRES
). Of course, the same story was true for modified class with the AWD and RWD guys putting up some very very fast times.
So if i can't even break into the 2:02's with Maxrev's R compound equipped S2k, there is no way i'm going to hit a 1:59.7 with my street tire stinky s2k. I knew i couldn't reclaim my "Street Class Champion" title anymore, but maybe, just maybe i still had a chance to reclaim "1st place Street RWD Class" title. With only doing 2:10's in my practice sessions with traffic, i went into my first Time Attack Session with uncertainty and stress. Seeing how other guys in RWD class were hitting 2:06 and 2:05, i thought i was doomed. Anyhow, with words of inspiration from a good friend K and Maxrev, i kept my head up and tried my best to drive my car at the limit. To my surprise, my friends inform me that i had hit a 2:04.443 during that session, which was good enough for 1st place for that particular time attack session by about .09 seconds. The 2nd place car, a 2006 BDX mustang GT driven by Nascar Driver, Chris Cook, was breathing heavily on my back. The 3rd place car was no slouch either, clocking in a very respectable 2:05.2.
Unfortunately, i did not improve on my time during the second session. Neither did the 3rd place car. However, the Nascar driver went nuts, by passing me on the warm up lap, throwing a bunch of dirt on the track for me, and improving his time by .7 seconds, enough to earn him 1st place RWD class, noooooo
haha. So I guess nascar drivers actually do know how to deal with turns
.
Onto modified class...
Maxrev started off his practice session, consistently hitting 1:59's (a couple low 1:59's) with a passenger only driving 7/10ths at most. We knew that when it came time for the time attack session, 1:58's were possible. The second practice session, Maxrev takes his car out for a spin without a passenger and makes a couple 1:58 passes
. This was good enough to give him enough breathing space between all the other modified RWD cars except for an NSX, hitting 1:56's during the practice sessions. Seeing how Maxrev was only able to do 1:56.7 with the AJ-Racing car from the Super Street Time Attack, we knew it was unlikely that he would beable to do it with his own personal car with full interior. Thus, Maxrev did not feel the need to remove his passenger seat for the time attack sessions as he did not have a chance against the NSX. During the time attack, Maxrev hit a very impressive 1:58.351 (with passenger seat too!), earning him 2nd place in modified RWD class, with the first place NSX having a time of 1:55.x.
To be honest, i did not think there was much improvement that Maxrev could do after he hit his 1:59.7 a month ago with his car. This just goes to show how crazy Maxrev really is. He has the ability to push the car to the limit literally at all times and uses this ability to trace a very fast line.
to maxrev for shocking us once again with your 1:58.351.
Cliffnotes:
-Maxrev w/R compounds: 1:58.351 2nd place Modified RWD Class
-StinkyTofu w/Street tires: 2:04.443 2nd place Street RWD Class
I believe 2:03's is possible with street tires. I don't know if i'm going to try that or just move onto r compounds next year. We'll see!
And of course, i can't make a post about this without adding a video:
