After looking closely at the rubber cushion I think I'll heed TWF's warnings and just leave them in.

On my Eibach they are metal to metal and I don't think it will make a difference. Many of the High end coil overs don't have those on them and are metal to metal

Sorry but I forgot to mention the size of the springs is about the same size as the metal

Does your spring have sideway move or is hat made to fit spring?
I assume hat on those high end units is nice and flat with perfect fit.

I would prefer metal-to-metal but only if the spring cap is captured in the shock hat and not allowed to slide around which would happen if I simply removed the hat's rubber spring cushion. In my picture of the shock hat above you can see how the cushion surrounds the KW spring cap.

You need custom piece if you want metal on metal. There are 2 rivets under the rubber. You don't have nice flat surface. Why don't you get hats with bearings if that is what you like to have?

Cost. I'd love to have some nice pillow ball shock hats but I don't believe the cost/benefit ratio makes it a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks but if I could find that I'd make them myself on the lathe in the garage but I'll keep my eyes open for a suitable plastic tube.

You can buy piece of plastic new for about $100 to do 4 of them. Mcmaster has some they sell by foot.
When I did my for helper springs I found piece on ebay. It was solid 4.5" rod so I had to machine more but price was right. With tube you could make all 4 in about hour
