Thumbs up Is running ap1 wheels on a ap2 effective?

Considering getting an extra set of wheels for the track, should I use ap1 rims or ap2 rims?

(I dont wanna fork over cash for another set of ap2 wheels)

PS

If you are just looking for a round piece of metal that will hold race tires while you track you'll be hardpressed to beat the value of the AP1 rims. You can get them super cheap and sticky tires for them will be less expensive then the 17" variety.

I'm sure though that the AP2 rims and tire combo will feel slightly better due to the shorter sidewalls but that can be mitigated with choosing a tire manufacturer that builds stiff sidewalls.

AP2s are better... More contact patch and actually lighter than AP1.

THere's a Best Motoring episode comparing both wheels...

AP2s allow the car to hit faster times.

Couldn't agree more. It's hard to beat the overall bang-for-the-buck in AP1 rims. A set without tires should run you no more than $300.

You can run a wider tire with the AP2 rims, but they will set you back a grand or more...and the tires will be more expensive on average.

I've driven both wheel configs and the differences are negligible IMHO. Definitely not worth the extra $$$. Personally...if I had AP2 stockers, I would sell them for 2 sets of AP1 rims and spend the leftover cash on a DE.

I'll add to what others have said. I found a set for 225 with fairly well used tires on ebay, and the guy was local. Can't beat that for a dedicated set of track wheels!

You will save some money buying 16" tires, but not much in my research. It's definitely nice to have a set for r-comps and a set for stock though.

IMO, AP1 16s w/ RA1s will be a good starter track setup. I've attended a couple DE events on the stock setup, and I'm ready to start going faster. If I get fast enough to warrant crazy wheel/tire setups (9" wheels F/R, wider tires, etc.) I can always sell the AP1s to a fellow track driver.
