Default S2K Challenge Round 7 Results!

Round 7 of the S2K Challenge had one of the closest battles we’ve seen in quite awhile.

The S2K’s showed up in force to represent against the 86 Cup crowd. The acton during sessions 2-4 was as hot as the 92 degree weather. Lets see how it shaped up.

Stock class had 4 competitors. Piloting a stock S2K around Buttonwillow takes nerves of steel and serious commitment to clock a quick lap. 4th place went to Gabe Shyu who only ran 2 sessions. His fastest time of a 2:30.817 was set in the AM. 3rd place was Van Nguyen. Van’s 2:22.083 was set in the heat of session 4. With a little more coaching from her co driver Gary Van will be in the 2:1X shortly. 2nd place went to Bryan Kim. Brian’s 2:13.730 was also set in the hot 4th session. 1st went to Gary Yeung. Gary’s manly 2:04.307 is an impressive time, especially for a stock car! Congrats Stock class drivers!!!

Street Class had the second most attendees with 8 S2K’s. 8th place went to Brian Iriana with a 2:27.219. 7th place was Christopher Gau with a 2:12.282. 6th place was Marvin Lopez with a 2:08.707. 5th place was John Lee with a 2:08.242. John’s BMW with him behind the wheel is knocking on the sub 2 barrier. With a bit of aero I bet the S2K will be faster. 4th place went to Norman Kung with a 2:08.222 which was set in Session 4’s heat. 3rd place was Kevin Ma with a 2:06.795. 2nd place was Sohan Kota with a 2:05.169 which was also set in session 4. The 1st place honors goes to Yi-Chao Huang with a 2:04.611, also set in the last session. The majority of Street Class set their best times during the hottest part of the day! I can tell there will be more speed out of this class shortly.

Mod Class had the largest field in 3 years of the Challenge. 12 Mod class cars varying in setups from wingless on R-Comps to full aero on Street Tires and everything in between.
12th place went to AJ Jaquias. AJ set a 2:07.106 in his 3rd session. AJ needs to move up to Green run group to get out of traffic!!!! 11th place went to Willy Tagliavini with a 2:03.737. 10th place was David Leung on his 300TW tires. David’s 2:03.737 was set in Red 2. 9th place was Ryan Delgrosso. Ryan’s recently come over to the dark side and added full aero! His 2:03.093 was a new PB at Buttonwillow. 8th place was Kevin Lui. Kevin set a 2:03.034 in his 3rd session. 7th place was Son Vo with a 2:01.697. Here is where it gets close. Get your calculators out! The next 5 spots were only separated by 3 tenths of a second! 6th place was Kai Moon with a 2:00.993. 5th place was Doug Chan. Doug’s 2:00.933 was 6 hundredths of a second faster! 4th place was Challenge Veteran Mike Tsay. Mike’s 2:00.893 was also set in the 4th session heat. 3rd place and current Mod class points leader, Ted Park set a 2:00.725 in Green 2. 2nd place was Si Tang. Si set a 2:00.673 in Red 3. The Top Mod driver of the day was Marc Gabay. Mark came sooooo close to going sub 2 with a small aero car. His 2:00.125 was set in Red 4. I know we will see a sub 2 out of Marc soon, maybe as early an next month! Congrats Mod Class Drivers!

Super Mod had 5 participants. In typical Buttonwillow fashion, it takes a sub 2 to make the podium, and sometimes that isn’t enough. 5th place went to Man Chun Chan with a 2:00.946 in the head of Red 4. 4th place AND FIRST TIME GOING SUB 2 was Dave Lara. Dave broke into the Sub 2 club in Red 2 with a 1:59.309. Dave was quoted as saying “I could have done a :58 if you wouldn’t have slowed me down!’ 3rd place went to Rockstar Garage’s own Justin Taylor. Justin also joined the Sub 2 Club this weekend. Justin dropped a 1:58.436 in Red 4. If we gave points for the cleanest car, it would have gone to Justin’s new wrap on his car. Sweetness! Thanks for taking the time to slum it with the S2K Challenge during your MotoIQ off weekend! 2nd place went to Dustin Dessero with a 1:57.117 while apparently holding up Dave Lara in Red 2. Top honors went to the crazy fast and selfie addict Chris Elders. Chris’s stroked S2K set a 1:55.664 in Red 2. Has the arms race started in SuperMod? No one knows but I bet we will see new tires and or over nighted parts prior to our next event.

Unlimited class had 1 competitor. Tom Tang brought down Irene to join the Challenge. Tom was battling car trouble all day yet in the final session of the day he set a 1:55.979. Thanks Tom for bringing the cleanest most complete S2K build to the challenge. Irene has a diff cooler! Talk about bling!!!

As for the 86 vs the S2K aspect of the challenge, The 86 guys were treating the TT as the times for the competiton while the S2K’s used sessions 2-4 to bring the heat. Many of the S2K cars didn’t participate in the TT.

However in sessions 2-4 the outcome was:

S2K Stock Gary Yeung’s 2:04.307 vs 2:04.567 set by Bob Bankard in his Street 86.

Win for S2K!

S2K Street Yi Chao Huang’s 2:04.611 vs 2:05.140 set by Garrett Tokuno in his Mod 86

Win for S2K!

S2K Mod Marc Gabay’s 2.00:125 vs 1:59.829 set by Mike Kang’s unlimited 86. Boost and aero!

Win for 86…

So join us October 17th for Round 8 which will be back at Buttonwillow. Who will go faster?

What are the common setups/limitations for Super Mod class? Full aero and Hoosier Tires allowed?

Nobody runs hoosiers, they are 4pt tire.

Typical supermod cars are:

17x10
255 square
NT01
Coilovers
Giant wing
Some kind of front aero
ECU
some breathing/power mods

Mod cars are typically all that on street tires or all that on NT01's but smaller aero.

Thanks. Just curious as I passed by Buttonwillow on my way to Laguna Seca a couple months ago. I had thoughts of somehow trying to get some laps in there since I was already in the area but timeline was too tight. Just curious where my car would fit in with the classing you guys run, seems fun.

Wing, front splitter, hoosiers or I could run RC1, coilovers, Flashpro. Basically a NASA TTB car. 2540lbs with driver.

Would be nice to try and get this going on the East coast. There has been some talk of doing it in the Florida region.

Technically you would be in Unlimited because of your weight regardless of tire. Most SM and MOD guys are 2700 to 2800 with driver. Some even heavier lol. But add a ballast to get you to 2700 and run RC1s, youd be in SM. Run Street tires and get to 2800 and youd be in MOD

The rules we've used have been sharpened over the years. Last weekend it was suprising to see how close the points mimic the reduction in lap times. We had a guy in a stock car run a 2:04. My car is 7 points (aka seconds) and I ran a 1:57.

If you guys can get this going don't reinvent the wheel, use our point system.

Plus how sweet would it be to do an east vs west event!!!

You guys need to start looking into fitting your cars into NASA TTC/TTB because nationals are going to be at Buttonwillow next year!
