And for manufacturing efficiency reasons, it is quite possible for a company to use a single shell design standard and just tweak it a bit for the M or SA ratings. Just because a helmet has an M rating does not necessarily mean it would fail the impact portion of the SA test.
For what its worth, my Arai GP5K is significantly heavier than the same size M rated RX7, but then again that's Arai.

Note I said "possible". This is more of a factor at lower price points, where the manufacturers are trying to get as much economy of scale as they can.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, hence the last part of my reply.

I was just clarifying.

FWIW, I have an SA helmet and an M helmet. I used to just have an M, but when I put a roll bar in my car I switched to an SA (and also a HANS).

I think that an M is probably fine for the typical stock interior car. The interiors are designed for people not wearing helmets at all.

Once you start adding a lot of hard head-strike items into the car, then it only makes sense to go to the helmet standard that is designed for that.

How much was that HJC, is it pretty light? If you wouldn't mind can you throw it on a scale and let us know? I'm looking to replace my M2000 Pyrotect full face and want a much lighter helmet that's SA approved.
My AR10 weighs 3lb 8 oz, size medium. It's been good to me so far, not that I've owned another helmet to compare it to, though.

And yes, of course you need an SA helmet if your rules require an SA helmet.
There's a clue hidden in there somewhere.

AR-11? Pshh.... HX-11 FTW!

But really, the AR11 is one of the best deals out there. It is by far one of the best helmets regardless of price. I would say it's comperable to a GP5 for 1/3 the price.

Or you can get a carbon HX11 for the price of a fiberglass GP5

I really like my HX11.
it is nice and light but I do not know the numbers.....

I would think a lighter helmet helps in the neck muscles from Side G's
you can get worn out in a race faster with more weight on your head....
hell even at the end of a sprint race for me I find myself resting my head on the seat in turns...especially at Thunderhill in the summer.
