Well, the carbon raises the compression ratio, which probably isn't a good thing out here in CA with 91 octane and hot summer weather. Good way to trigger the knock sensor and lose hp.

But I agree that the mystery gunk is sketchy. I'm going to just stick with pouring a big-name injector cleaner in the tank and letting it do the job slower and less dramatically.

Thinking further, last Friday at Cal Speedway where there was repeated prolonged (40+ seconds) of WOT/VTEC on the oval probably burned off any "excess" buildup of carbon since the catch-can problem at Buttonwillow, right?

I thought I heard many years ago that you need some carbon deposit to keep things cool, but could be wrong.

deppenma, Can we get a part # and description of what you're showing us including all parts needed to complete the job? I'm wanting something of this sorts but don't want a catch can taking up space unless I have to.

No reply on what's in the pic? The blow-up of the pic has a label "5 micron filter catch can", but I don't see a catch can, and don't see how a filter would do anything.
