Default Shims on track pads?

I've been using shims on my track pads, but now I'm questioning it. Is there any reason to use shims? I don't really care if they're a bit noisier, but I do care if they're less efficient without shims.

Shims will help reduce the amount of heat transferred to the piston/fluid. If they'll fit with your track pads, no reason to leave them out.
