Just a note that at the DC Prosolo they were taking sound from many different locations and we had 3 drivers so I got lots of data on sound from the Greddy RS single 70mm exhaust. Car is an AP2 with PLM header, Berk 70mm cat, Greddy RS exhaust, K&N FIPK, and lightly tuned with hondata. Not using the silencer. Dunlop tires (that probably factors in, I think they're louder than hankooks).

Most of the readings were 90-93 dB but there were a couple 94-95.0 dB readings.
Jon,
Where did you see the db readings listed? I'm very curious on the readings of my car.

Thanks
At national events they have a binder in the red tent where all the results were posted. You could try emailing one of the DC people and seeing if they'll tell you a couple of your numbers or see if they have it digitally somehow. For nationals they actually post them online typically but I don't think they do for the smaller events.

I see. I did see the one person taking readings on the left course, but thought they'd be posted online somewhere.
Would they have warned us if my car was too loud at FedEx Field? I'm curious if the 76mm exhaust will be a problem at Lincoln.

Thanks

Yes, the sound guy in DC....we'll say he takes his job very seriously. A bunch of XP people got warnings I know.

So you definitely had no runs over 97dB or you would know. Lincoln has the same limits, 97 warning, 100 means fix it.

Glad to know. I just emailed Perry to find out if there will be readings at NNJR divisional.

Thanks for the info Jon.

Any word on sound limits at the meadowlands for the NE Div?

Since there's nothing in the supps, that means either they're following the national 100 dB limit or they're not taking sound at all. My bet is not taking sound at all. Either way I wouldn't be worried unless you're trying to do no muffler or something.

The tour is more of a concern - 90 dB at 75 ft, that's like 93 dB at the more normal 50 ft.

Austin,
There will be no sound limits at NEDIV @ Meadowlands.
I confirmed this with Perry.

Yea I'll be running unmuffled, guessing it's probably 95ish dB. Definitely will need to add a cherry bomb or something before the tour.

The wire is mild steel, not stainless steel and it works just fine. Yes it's the regular Lincoln stuff. The settings were A for heat setting with a rate of 2.5. The welder is what would be equivalent to the WeldPak 140 HD which can be purchased at Home Depot.
Did you use any shielding gas?? If so what mix?

Thanks,

Rob
Yes, Argon CO2

I've gone over the warning number at the Blytheville Fall Tour, but it was nowhere close to being illegal. Their approach of their warning was very laid back and just gave me a heads-up at where I was. I just said thanks, and continued racing.

Hmm... That reminds me... Depending on the real world results where they measured the sound, I am seriously considering the approach Rob (Random1) went with in the URL below and using my Invida on my DD.

Rob, have you posted your sound levels with this exhaust and I missed it? If not, do you mind sharing your numbers?

Thanks,

-Dave

I think the sound level achieved with my new setup is so low that it is not a concern at all. The dominate sound is the intake which I do not believe will trip over any of the lower limits like 93 dBA. It took me a while to get used to what sounds to pick up on when running at events. It was like someone turned my guitar amp down from 11 to 5. No feedback.

Over time the muffler has increased in volume a little as to be expected as the fiberglass settles in.

I did not get my readings from the San Diego Tour, but IMO they did not have a valid location for the sound meter. It would have read low compared to an appropriate location. This is supported by what I heard from others that checked their sound levels which were so low they were unbelievable, like 80 dBA. I can yell louder than that from 50 feet.

I really like this new muffler setup.

OK, so I received some flak from the chairman of our region about the noise level of my exhaust setup.

Intake: K&N FIPK
Header: PLM
Cat: Berk 70mm HFC
Exhaust: Cut after resonator w/ ~45 degree turndown
Other: Neo VAFC w/ VTEC @ 5k RPM, upper RPMs leaned out

I knew it was loud, but based off of everyone else's responses in this thread I figured it was within the 100 dB max limit. Therefore, to prove to them (and myself) that I was within the legal range, I took the sound meter from work and performed a little unofficial check. Readings were taken from a distance of 50 feet from the edge of the road at chest-height by a friend holding the meter in one hand, and my GoPro in the other. I drove by about five times winding out first gear and once in second.

Most if not all of my passes resulted in 100+ dB readings, two of which topped out at 106 dB which was the highest reading we saw. Unfortunate because now I have been proven wrong, by my own tactics, haha. Of course, nothing is "official" unless it is officially recorded at an event. And while we use our sound meter at work to report operating sound levels of our equipment for OSHA purposes, its also from Radio Shack and most likely not calibrated to NIST standards.

I will post the video once it is uploaded for everyone's reference.

Edit - Here is a first gear pull resulting in 106 dB

And the second gear pull that results in 106 dB as well

The presence of buildings nearby may have caused more resonant sound than there would be regularly in a wide-open lot.

The <100db readings many of us have posted were measured at 75', not 50'.

Hrmm... I thought the SCCA regulation was to measure at 50'?
