From the 2012 Solo Rule Book...

"The measuring point will be 50 ft from the edge of the course lane, using
a coned gate as a reference."

"SOUND STATION(S)
A Sound Station will be established at the measuring point(s) on the
course. At a minimum, an ANSI Type 2 sound with a digital readout will
be used.
The microphone will be mounted on a tripod, 3 to 4 feet above ground
level.
The microphone will be positioned perpendicular to the vehicle’s direction
of travel.
The meter will be set to “A” weighting, “Slow” Response.
When possible and practical, the Sound Station(s) will be as far away
as practical from inhabited buildings"

They were 75' at Nationals last year from the edge of the course. This year at Dixie, it was 50'. I was working course right next tothe sound at both these events and can confirm. Our local club is 75', but has a 93db limit.

Standing behind the sound meter like that can increase the noise as well as those buildings... Try placing it on a cone and stand close enough to the side to see the readings... I doubt it will affect your noise levels enough to make you legal but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Berk Header + 63.5mm HFC + JIC Titanium exhaust = 97-98db consistently at Spring Nationals. I will need to use the silencer for local events.

Send a PM to 762 as he has one and may have the sound level as well. I know it's loud, he's local. My guess is that it is less than 100 dBA, the SCCA limit.

this may be obvious, but the 2.2l seems to be louder. it's more air.

Yeah, sounds like 'bad idea to go to ATL' exhaust...

I've decided to no longer "compromise" on my 2002 and focus it just for autocross. Amongst other things... I'm moving the purty (dual exhaust) and awesome sounding invidia to my 2001 (soon to be daily driver/STR backup) and going to this lightweight cat-back. Thanks to Rob, I now have this on order. Can't wait for this to all come together.

Thanks again for sharing that info!

So it looks like the local events now have cracked down on the sound levels and the maximum allowed is 92db. Does anyone have any suggestions for a 70mm that would meet these requirements? I was thinking that the greddy SE would but I am having no luck finding one since they have been discontinued(someone sell me theirs!!!).

My biggest requirements for the exhaust are noise level, lower weight, sound (I cant stand a raspy exhaust ie invidia q300), and finally something that wont break the bank. I do prefer the SE style of muffler to the can but really I am sure I could get over the boy racer look if I had to.

Have people had much luck with custom fabrication? I was thinking a couple magnaflow mufflers might be the ticket especially if I put a flange after the first muffler so that I could disconnect the secondary exhaust for even lighter weight at the events where the sound requirements aren't quite as strict.
