STR -> SSM -> XP
I run SSM locally with a 220WHP 2850lbs car on 225 Hoosier A6's.. I usualy get destroyed by a 300ZX, we've beaten him a few times on a realy tight course.
So I'd say the car has the handling you need to boost it up to around 350WHP or something and run massive rims/tires

Im very interested in this topic as I have been running in STR this entire year. I have had a blast in STR although there has not been a hole lot of competition in my local events. There are some CR Str setups that run in "pro class" and they have bet me every event but besides them I have been doing pretty well and have won all nine events this year.
I currently have a AP1 with all the typical str parts such as Front sway bar/strut bar/NO rear sway/exhaust/header/intake/coils/17x9 wheels with 255 RS3s/good alignment
unfortunately I am definitively lacking power even on the short autox straights and certainty for DD fun... Therefore I have ordered a comptech supercharger and will then be moving into SSM !!
I have done some investigating locally looking at previous results and I would have taken first or second in SSM in my STR setup. Most of the winners locally are turbo miatas on r comps.
So my plan is to use all the suspension tuning learned from str, keep rs3's b/c I do not want to trailer or switch wheels/r comp tires out and with my added supercharger power I hope to drive to every event and toast some of the competition.

Comptech supercharger is totally the wrong way to go about SSM. We've been there. You still only have 80 ft*lbs of torque at 4000 rpms and will be shifting like mad. And as for driving to every event, make sure you have AAA as stuff breaks when you start modifying stuff. We broke two OEM diffs in one year launching on sticky tires.
My first idea is NOT, "I want to be out of str", or "I want to be in ssm, what mods can i do?" My Idea is I want more power for the fun factor, track days, and autox and in turn it so happens to take me out of STR and put me in SSM.
Sure anything can break and parts will have a higher probability of breaking when adding HP, but my goal it to have a competitive street car, I also have a much better time when I'm not hustling around to switch tires or unload from a trailer.
As for "beating other people with a faster car doesn't mean your improving" I think my driving skills will benefit greatly from adding hp and being somewhat "under prepped" for the class im in.
1. I will learn how to handle and race with more hp in a safe environment
2. If i am under prepped then I can really see how I match up as a driver as opposed to being more prepped than my competition
3. I will have more drivers and more competition in SSM Locally with the exception of nationals
Basically I want to make a change, add some HP. It ends up putting me in SSM and I think I can still be competitive and have a blast!

Well, I can tell you from experience that your best improvement as a driver will come from an apples to apples comparison. I didn't want to believe it either starting out, but a fast car can hide a bunch of bad habits. You don't have to believe me and you'll likely do your own thing anyway.
As perspective, I do W2W SCCA Club Racing and autocross. I've done track days with our 450whp S2000, but Club Racing in a Showroom Stock classed car was by far more fun and better learning / training. Heck even ChumpCar in a stock Miata on street tires was better training.
