STS2k - street tire class for s2k's
Curious: DELTA Region SCCA (New Orleans, LA) along with CENLA Region SCCA (Central Louisiana) have been running a special street tire class for s2000 called STS2K.
Basically, any mod is allowed, but you have to run street tires. The tires allowed are the same tires allowed in STS and STS2.
The turn out has been HUGE.
It began as a grudge class between some of the area's top drivers - everyone in s2000's. Most of the drivers were co-driving since they didn't own a s2k. Since then, 5 or six drivers have sold there cars and are now driving s2000's.
Is this being done anywhere else?
We are actually trying to determine a fair PAX for the class too.

I run in the local Road Tire class which allows anyone from any class to compete as long as they have tires with treadwear ratings of 140 or above. It uses PAX to determine position. Pretty competitive here, too - my competition is coming mainly from a CSP Miata although the HS PAX can be a killer...

I wrote 2 so far. The last one was about 6 months ago. If they get enough letters, they just may add an STX2 or STU2 class for us to run in.

The S2000 can not play in any of the existing ST classes. The idea of writing the letter is to get a ST class that the S2000 CAN play in. Such class would be STX2 or STU2. The tire limitation in STU is 275. I would guess that this would be the same for STU2 if there was such a class.

Someone who has this letter saved on their computer, post it so we all can copy it and sign it...and send it off in mass. I'd be very interested in this, I'm tired of getting my ass handed to me by the guys on Hoosiers....

For those interested in competing in your local regions, you would probably have better luck approaching this from a different angle. Instead of trying to have a new class created and published in the SCCA rulebook, why not talk to your local region's autocross chair?
Chances are, there are many stock and street-prepared guys in your region that would be interested in having a open Street Tire class. It's something we came up with in the South Carolina Region. Our rules are basically this:
This class is great for the guys/gals who like to run stock or even do some mods to their car, but aren't serious enough about autocross to spend $700+ in tires each year. Chances are, the folks who will run in this class aren't interested in running at the divisional/national level anyway, so why fight for a whole new national class?

- It is a paxed class, treated just like a novice class in most local regions.
- No STS, STU, STX, etc. class cars may compete. If you want to compete because the class is bigger, you must use the appropriate stock, street prepared, etc. class.
- Treadwear rating must be 140 or greater.
