Tire Testing Consortium
Ok,
I've been looking into my next set of tires (Kumho ASX's are gawd aweful) and there seems to be a lot of opinion out there about which tire handles better, but no real fact. Also what works well for one car may not work as well for another (load transfer, camber curves etc)
My suggestion:
get a bunch of AP1 and Ap2 rims with different tires (prefferably low mile) .
1 Stock S2K with a DL1 / traqmate / gtech pro
Skidpad same car with different tires on each run (stock rims if possible)
Also look at heat rise in each tire to determine how fast you could build heat.
if we could do a yaw response test that would be nice too. but it'll take me a while to figure out how to synch up the steering input with the yaw sensor so we can look at the time delay. And do it without a $300 sensor.
Short of investing in a $1M MTS tire tester / breaking into goodyear after hours this is the best I come up with.
I'll be looking into the traqmate system over the winter, so if anyone is still interested in the spring this might be worth organizing.

The difference between the various "max performance" tires just isn't great enough to merit that kind of extensive study. There are folks in the competition community that do their own tests, and you can see what tires they compete on.
Yokohama Neova, Falken RT-615, Hankook RS-2, and probably the Bridgestone RE-01R, just pick one and see how it goes. If you don't like it, think about why, and figure out which tire will be better in that respect. Buy that tire next time. You'll probably be pretty happy with any of them. Kumho ASX just isn't in the ballpark, so it's no wonder you were dissatisfied.
