Victoracer Tire Pressures Revisited
#12
whoa... That's cool you ran that low a pressure. I should have tried that out! I believe it may work but I have a hard time believing it would be faster than the "standard" pressure. Even tire temps be damned... that's just some low low.

[QUOTE=Colin,Sep 28 2004, 07:23 PM] When I was running the Victoracers, on the stock rims (and stock suspension), I always ran much less pressure than what is being discussed.

For those reasons, I can't agree with you that 23 psi (!) is anywhere near correct. I've never heard of anyone running pressures that low on any car, with any tire. Are you sure your pressure gauge is working properly?

OK let's say that I'm just way off on this, what would the symptoms be of too low a pressure? I mean once we switched to Kumhos, my results locally were always pretty good, consistent top ten in raw times in a field of 70-110. Three consecutive AS points championships so I can't be doing it all wrong.

Hey Colin, thanks for chiming in.
I've experimented with pressures reaching 25psi in the rears and it felt really sloppy. My guess is that my alignment isn't as aggressive as Colin's autocross-spec car so I need more pressure to prevent that mushy feeling I get when exiting corners. The other reason is that I'm kind of heavy on the throttle so I may be overheating the tires making greasy conditions appear sooner than they should.

Colin and I share the same car, and no doubt, the times got faster when Colin dropped the tire pressures. Perhaps the combination of crappy track with moderately lightened s2k on aggressive auto-x camber gives the right conditions for the low pressures(?).
Colin: did you run the same low pressures on your 16" stock wheels?

My S2000 with Victoracers started with cold pressures 17.5/21 R/F at Buttonwillow today. Hot pressures were 21/25. Car turned 2:08~ time on the last session it went out. 255/17 and 225/17.
With RA1s 275/18 and 235?/18 borrowed from spfinckter (thanks), my driver was able to get 2:06.93+. 30 cold f/r about 35 hot all around.

Wow Prolene, that's really low... but I'm sure you know what you're doing.
We just completed this month's event and I started off with 32f/30r and it was horrible, slid all over the place and took out 5 cones in a drift session like manner. I immediately bled to 28f/25r and it felt a lot better.
Is it possible that the combination of a poor track surface, surface temps reading 152 degrees F and "marbles" be the reason why running pressures I'm using now seem better?
