Went autocrossing
Get a set of decent to good street tires, I wouldn't go to a set of R-compounds yet if I were you. R-compounds tend to mask mistakes that rookie drivers are making because they have so much grip.
The Bridgestones or Dunlop Z1 StarSpecs would be perfect, but if you can't spare the budget, RS2s will do as well. As long as you have the same tire on all 4 corners, I think you will see a huge improvement.
Get an alignment, lots of seat time, and you'll be good to go. See the FAQ at the top of the forum for alignment suggestions.
Most of all, HAVE FUN!

Now you know where my screen name, Imp, comes from.
Look you're in School. My best piece of advice to you is this....
Ask *smart* questions, not questions just to ask them.
Don't be that kid that holds up the class because they ask a crap load of questions because they either a) didn't pay attention, b) didn't research, c) is just clueless.
When you get out of school, those that ask the fewest questions, but still gets the job done, wins.

1. Seat time
2. Ride with faster S2000 drivers and see how they do it
3. Invite them to drive your car and give suggestions
4. Datalogger to compare yourself against faster drivers
I should be at a couple of the KYR fun events if you want to catch a ride then.

So my street tires in the front were extremly wore so I changed then out for my other ones that came on the extra set of wheel I brought. So I ran douglous zr s in the front and some riken tire in the back.
What should I do? I got beat by 1.4 seconds by the only other guy in my class which is a fully pepped c4 corvette running a6's. I would really like to beat this guy and I think if I solved my understeered problem I would of been alot closer.
(sorry!)
Already mentioned, and I think you got it, but:
Tires are, like, important? And stuff?
I started Autoxing this year and bought my s2000 MY02 in May. All I have done to the car is Dunlop Spec Stars and CR Front Sway Bar. The rest of my money has gone to auto x schools and seat time. The autox schools have been the single most important thing I have purchased so far. I was clueless until you have the pros actually spend time with you and show you want to do. If you are on the east coast Solopro or evolution are where to go.
Take your time and do research. I have posted very few times but I have gone through all the old threads to see what advice I can get. The information is out there just take the time and find it.

For my 2 cents, a very good autocross instructor I had said "slow corners are NEVER an opportunity to make up time - only a place to lose time. There is a right speed for the corner, it will feel deadly slow, but be patient and use the boring time to look ahead..." Then if you come out of the corner with perfect position, get on the gas way earlier than your competition - you'll eat them for lunch.
If you are serious about autocrossing get some decent tires. For street tire classes, (like SCCA's STR next year), imho, there are 4 coices - Advan Neovas, Dunlop Direzzas, Bridgestone RE 11s (that isn't quire the right model name), and Kumho ECSTAs. I have an '04 MY, and run 225s on the front and 255s on the rear.
Finally, if you competition is running R rated tires (A6s), and you are running non-R tires, given equal skill levels, they get a second on you on a 30 second course. There is no substitute for traction.

Evolution is your best bet. Cost me $250 when I went this year. Local schools will give you a lot of help to, and would be cheaper. Our local class is $130.
Check the
for tire sizes. I love my Bridgestones RE-01Rs (RE-11s now).
Most if not all of you questions about getting faster is in the sticky at the top of the Racing forum.
