Default What breaks in competition?

I'm thinking about hitting the Cen-Div, National Tour, and Pro-Solo events that are within 8 hrs of Louisville, KY next year. I was just wondering what spare parts would you all carry if you had to drive the car to and from the events? I was thinking about picking up a used diff assembly and possibly axles but wanted to know from the die-hard racers what problems they have encountered.

Thanks,

-Chris

I understand that the inner left CV joints fail first... it happened to me. So I'd bring an extra axle or two. Diff might fail but I think it's less likely.

What kind of milage is on your driveline and is it making any odd sounds currently? My axle started letting me know it was going to die months before I killed it.

I've got 55k on the drivetrain. Currently I get one "click" when pull off in first gear. My main concern is that I just switched to the V710s and around here we mostly race on asphalt. My guess is that any weakness will be shown when I start launching on concrete.

At my last race I had the rear of the car on jack stands to play with the axles but I was unable to duplicate the sound.

Thanks for the response.

Axle nut. Regrease and retorque to 220 ft-lbs.

I had a clicking when turning and rolling... like when I was in the parking garage and I was turning down the ramp I could hear a click. It sounded just like a fwd axle that was dying. Go figure. I heard it for months prior to the break and I did about 50-60 hard race tire launches on both conc. and asphalt before it broke. Also, about 20,000 miles ago, I started feeling a vibration on the freeway under acceleration load. It was the inner cv joint pitting. I guess that was another clue.

BTW, I get the click from the axle nut too. I've torqued and regreased but it comes back.

If the click comes back, it's likely that the wheel bearing is getting ready to go. I had the bearing go within a month of retorquing...

Were you able to clean it up/regrease/reuse or did you have to buy new ones? Did you do both sides to be on the safe side? Thanks.

Rear end components are most likely to cause you problems.

The original question was posed last year. I only found it because I was searching for like-symptoms.

I have a shuddering under acceleration. It started this past weekend on the track. It goes away when cruising or coasting.

Skip, That sounds like pitted inner CV joints to me.
