Default What is the current Auto-X tire setup for an '04?

Hoosier? Kumho? Other?

225/245? 225/275? 245/275? Is a bigger front bar mandatory?

The goal would be to: 1) be competitve locally; and 2) not destroy the street tires.

I would expect to use a tire trailer. I figure the wheels, tires, trailer, and hitch will push north of $3k. I already have tools, 24v electric impact wrench, and lightweight jack. Have an air tank, but may need a light duty gas compressor.

Thanks,

David

local guy here who's very fast on the auto-x... screen name "Cone Killa" has an '05 i believe, with 245/275 Khumo's with the Gendron sway bar.

I use Kumho V710 245/275 on stock wheels. No rubbing and they really do fit on stock wheels despite what tirerack site tells you. After running 8 months with a totally stock 04 S2000 I was getting a lot of rear wheel lift on some corners. This causes the limited slip to put all the power to the wheel in the air. So 3 months ago I changed to Koni yellow shocks. This did not solve the rear wheel lift but has helped with some other handling issues. One month ago I changed to the Comptech sway bar. This appears to have solved the rear wheel lift.

I bought a hitch from www.chaserace.com. Very sturdy and won't pull through the trunk like the Delan hitch.

I didn't like my one experience with a trailer so I got the guys that build the TireTail. I was the first 04 model so they built the template from my car. It works real well and doesn't affect the handling as much as I thought it would.

If you want a top notch setup, you have a choice between the Kumho V710 and the Hoosier A6.

The Kumho V710s ought to last a little longer. The sizes are 245/45-17 and 275/40-17. They will rub your front fender liners.

The Hoosiers come in a better size for the front, 245/40-17. Those shouldn't have a problem with rubbing. They also should provide a more direct feel. Right now, I am trying out the 245/40-17 for front and rear. After the event I was at today, I think that works reasonably well, although it isn't quite as stable as with 275 rear tires.

If your local competitors aren't running either of those tires, then you have the option of the somewhat less grippy but much longer lasting Kumho Victoracer. I think the sizes are 225 and 255. I drove a car with that setup and liked it.

After the SCCA event today, with lots of turns in the top end of 2nd gear, I'm definitely happy with the 245/40-17 Hoosier A6 on all four corners. It might be considered an "advanced" setup though. Less margin for error / more likely to overheat the rear tires.

^ you said 245/45/17 rubbed in the front, how much camber you running?

I plan on running those tires next year, I'm lowered slightly on Teir RS coilovers but will be running about -2.0 camber.

-1.6 degrees. Because the liner comes in horizontally from the place where it rubs, I don't think more camber will give you any clearance -- maybe less clearance.
