16x8 enclosed trailers can be had for ~$4000. They weigh ~2300-2500 lbs, so they still fall beneath the ~5500 lb tow capacity of most larger SUVs. They're not so big and heavy to need a full size pickup and don't destroy gas mileage as badly, either.

I had a custom built steel/wood trailer with brakes and dual 3500# tandem axles built for around 1750. I made it 12' with a 2' dove and minimum width. The S fits perfectly and the trailer fits in my garage just fine (deed restricted community). Weighs just over 1000#. Its no beauty compared to an aluminum trailer, but its gets the job done just fine. Not sure what area your located, but I'm sure you can find someone to build you one.

[QUOTE=PedalFaster,Dec 2 2009, 09:36 PM]Be careful -- 2500 lb. trailer plus 2800 lb. car plus a few sets of wheels and tires, tools, gas jugs, etc. and you'll clear 6000 lbs. easy.

few questions:

1. what tow vehicle do you have ? if it is just a small SUV or pick up truck, you are limited to open aluminum trailer. if you have mid size SUV/truck, then open steel trailer. unless you have a big truck/diesel, I don't recommend you tow an enclosed trailer. it also depends on ur location. if you live out in Oklahoma, you can tow anything with a Civic. but if you live in Aspen, nothing short of big suv will do.

2. cost. you can go crazy here, from $1,500 new to $15,000 new. I have a $1,700 one, and a $11k one. both does the job.
