Default What's your long term plan for your S2000?

We've had our AP1 since 2003 and our CR since 2009. The AP1 has undergone some changes over the years and the CR has stayed pretty stock. Unsure of what future direction I want to take these cars and just rolling scenarios through my head.

I know Nick B. has also had some thoughts of moving from B-stock to more big track work in the future.

With the reclassing of our SSB Civic to T4 next year, I've moved that car to ice racing / ice autox.

Was thinking of using the AP1 for TT or casually in DE, but that still leaves me a gap for W2W (SCCA Club Racing).

We have an '11 WRX and an F-mod for autox, so debating whether to cage the CR and bring it to T3 but it's emotionally hard for me to do something that's semi-permanent to a limited run car.

Conventional wisdom would be to just sell the CR and pick up an already prepped track car, but I find comfort in already knowing the chassis....

So for you guys, where do you see your S2000 plans going? Continue the status quo or evolve the motorsport niche for the car? Like Rylan and Ian, do you stick with the car and do something novel (and painful) with it? Or bail and pick up a tried and true vehicle?

Just some silly season discussion.

will prolly have him tow his car to scca so I can run too.

As someone truly addicted to autocross (despite my lack of talent) I plan to continue to run in STR until it is no longer competitive. At that point it will be for sale. If it doesn't sell then I'm thinking FP. If it does sale then I think an Elise will be next.

I would like to spend some time developing my car (and more importantly my driving of it) into an competitive level that will hang closely with most tours and bigger events. I feel the car has a long way to go, and my driving even more so.

Eventually, when I'm at that point, I expect my mileage will be approaching the range that I'd like to sell and replace with a newer version... and swap all the parts over. Still torn on whether a CR with no soft top will be the best for my uses. I still like to drive the car around town. That's a decision that will likely need to be made in ~2 years or so.

currently building the car for NASA PTB / SCCA STU. Just got it back from the cage builder this last week and I'm really excited to get things moving along.

Just Win, Then Win some more and after that I'd like to Win alittle more.

More serious answer...

I can't afford W2W racing full time and compitition is what drives me in motorsports. I plan to AutoX for a long while and try to win a jacket or 2 by the age of 30. (7 years to go) Then I'll probably slow down on the autoX and just do it more for the fun and less for the wins and bragging rights. I may one day take up W2W kart racing but at my age I've missed my chance at ever being great in relation to peers my age because the "fast" guys all started karting by the age of 7 and would have 20 years experience on me by the time I started. I may also do a few track days just to say I did.

Car wise-

Option 1- Continue being a lower midpack, boarderline tropier in my AP1 with 170k miles on it.

Option 2- Go full blown BSP and break alot of parts, take home alot of FTDs locally and be looked up to as "that fast car" locally. Put as much pressure on Marc as possible but ultimtly lossing to him 9/10 races.

Option 3 go buy a CR, transfer all my STR parts to it and go Ham on the leader boards. Win a couple more Driver of the Years locally. Then in a few years maybe move to BSP with that car.

The S2000 is to much fun to drive! I would't move to something else for a long time. Maybe if I get wealthy one day I'll move to something exotic.

My plans:

1) Keep driving my 06 porker S2000 in STR and have that be my main focus. I really like autocross.

I really don't want to get a CR to replace it for the weight savings but the thought is nagging. Don't think I'll do it though, and definitely not soon.

2) Put a roll bar in my beater NB miata and do one or two track days this year with that

I was having the debate with my friends. I've done a couple track days and am bit by the bug. We kept talking about if I should prep my car, and the consensus was to get a car that I wouldn't feel bad about cutting up and putting into a wall.

So now I have a second car that now doesn't have much of an interior, and I already know I made the right move.

I have the same thoughts about the CR. It's tough to cut one up. There is a T3 prepped CR in Ohio Nordelly is trying to sell. That may be the best route for having a CR with a cage.

I picked up an NA this summer and love the thing. I think I did just as many track days in it as I did my s2000 this year. Cost of consumables is so much better - plus its fun to chase down less experience s2000 drivers in a miata.

I loved it so much I picked up an NB to turn into a NASA PTE car.

haha, yeah I definitely hear that. My miata's my former stock class autocross car and I was supposed to sell it after I got my S2000......but it's such a great car and it's so cheap and easy to work on and the $4k or whatever I'd get for it just doesn't seem worth it. Now don't get me wrong, if someone forced me to pick between the two I'd go with my S2k with no doubt in my mind, but I thought I'd never want to drive the miata again after getting the s2k and that's definitely not the case. They're both fun in different ways. And it'll be perfect for a fun track car that I won't have to worry about.
