Hi all, is there a general consensus that it’s better to go with extended lugs if your car is going to be used on track?

Extended lugs aren't necessarily "better". It's by no means a requirement to track. The fact that they're extended allows some different wheel options and you could use a bigger spacer if need be than a shorter lug. If you need to clear a BBK or you're trying a really aggressive fitment, allowing a larger spacer with more threads engaged on the lugs can be helpful. It's also easier to put wheels onto extended studs but that's about it. MSI offers various lengths and I don't know if a group buy would have us all buying the same length or if we could spec our own. Part of me wants extended for future proofing. Part of me wants OEM length in hopes that I could use the closed end lug nuts I already have and like.

The other part of it is metallurgy. The studs on anyone's car, assuming original, are 14+ years old. Bolts that are repeatedly tensioned stretch out over time. Stuff happens and studs can become stripped. For track cars, where the wheels are frequently on and off and they may be torqued on while the assembly is heated up, OEM ones are more likely to fail at some point than someone who replaces tires every 20k miles and never takes the wheels off in that time. The MSI studs are supposed to be really nice and I'm sure they're significantly stronger than stock. It's a potential failure point to be addressed.

For me, personally, I'm at 117k miles, have refreshed some bushings and a bunch of other stuff over the last two years. I may wait for wheel bearings to go bad or do them pre-emptively. While I have hubs off, I'd add in some extended studs instead of re-using old OEM ones. I'd like to have some on hand for whenever that day comes and the MSI ones seem to be the nicest choice available.

Are most owners using 55mm extended wheel lugs?
