Default wtb cheap / reliable track car for fun....

anyone point me in the right direction?

$4kish - needs to be reliable and have 2 seats so i can yell at the person behind the wheel. Would prefer a caged car... no reason to be particularily fast... just fun to take out and beat on for a few friends.....

thanks

i don't want to make my S2000 into an instructors car and I don't want to destroy my little 45k miles 89 Crx si.... so I thought I would look for a reliable beater for some freinds to enjoy....

My Miata sold a week back, it had about 100 track days on it and never had any type of mechanical issue. $4k is easy, $4k with a decent cage is harder. You still have the vette? That would be a fun DE car. Actually, why not run your H1 S2000?

If you want a decent car (in the sense of reliability and handling) and a decent cage, you'll spend more than $4k for a car to flog on the track.

In this economy, you can get a well-used Spec Miata for maybe $7000; it won't be the fastest car, but it'll go around corners like you won't believe, and be as safe as a track car can be.

E30 325is
Miata

Those are your best choices. CRX or Rabbit is also good if you want FWD.

The cheaper you buy the donor car, the more work it will take to make it a track car. I would guess more like $6K-$7K by the time you have a good track day car, or $10K by the time you have a race car.

It's always more expensive to build than to buy a fully track-prepared car, especially in this environment (more sellers than buyers of fully-prepared race cars). There are advantages to building your own, but initial money-saving isn't one of them).

Check the for sale ads on the racing sites like specmiata.com (and specE30, if there is one).

you won't be able to get a Spec Miata or Spec E30 for $4k. you can get a Spec RX7 for $4k though, like Zach said.
