Default 2001 S vs. Audi S4

Driving to work today from Chicago to Schaumburg and get cut off by a Silver S4. Its the V8 version with dual pipes in back. I like the looks of them and have consider buying in the past, just too much $ and reliability of Audi/VW is poor from personal experience.

Anyway driving behind him for a couple of miles until traffic clears up and he punches it and swerves into far left lane, I follow. We went from cruising at 60 to around 110 where I had to let off or I would have ran into his bumper.

Through third he was slightly ahead, through fourth I was gaining slowly, midway through 5th I had to slowdown b/c I was too close and right lanes had some random cars so wasn't about to attempt to go around him with traffic.

I have 4.77 gears, VAFC, and AEM v2 intake, and no spare. He was probably automatic, not sure of any mods, probably none.

I thought those things were in the same league as the M3? Guess not. I may have been aided by him blocking all the wind by being the lead car. But either way I gained on him after his initial jump.

i thought they were M3 material as well, in the neighborhood of 400 horse.

googled specs for a 2004 version
Curb Weight 3,825lbs.
Engine 4.2L/344-hp V-8, DOHC, 5 valves per cylinder

depends on what year you raced... i think an 04 is not a twin turbo, just a strong V8..
the older ones were 250hp v6's...

always nice to keep up with or beat a car $15-20k+ more than yours ..

The current issue of Road & Track rates the current S4 as a 13.8 second quarter miler. Not sure how much weight this holds in the real world... Just posting what I see.

S4 has been a V8 since 2004. 04-05 was the B6 (well, 2003.5 - 2005.5) with the 4.2L 40v V8 from the A8 producing 340hp. 0-60 was very low 5s (5.1ish). 06 (2005.5) saw the B7 S4 with the same engine. The M3 is a tad faster in a straight line, probably due to less weight, but around the track, this difference is less pronounced I think. now the B7 RS4.. thats a whole different story

those acceleration times are that quick due to its awd launch, i'm sure from a roll it won't be as quick as the lighter rwd m3. saw one at the track on saturday and it was understeering like crazy.

from a highway roll, it should only be very marginally faster than a s2000 i think or maybe even

a guy ran 13.34 on the S4 boards; thats the highest i have seen

id like to run into a s2000 just to see

I do think that day in day out a 4.2 S4 will take the S2k in the 1/4 though. Just dump the clutch and go, AWD and 4 plus liters don't hurt!
