Default Beat by a Civic...

I was driving home from the Verona Autocross today, just cruising along on Interstate 64. I see a group of cars fast approaching. Three Civics and an Accord. One Civic looked stock, one was very loud, and one just had a huge drag tachometer. The latter pulls up beside me and holds up three fingers for 3rd gear. I'd never raced anyone before, and it was on a very long downhill straightway and there were no cars in front of us so I thought what the hell, I'm feelin racy.. I put it in 3rd and waited for him to honk.

He started about half a car length behind me and I heard him go full throttle so I did the same. I walked him up to about 105 before shutting down, but I never got more than a car length ahead. At this point I'm thinking he's got something big under there.

After some traffic, we ended up taking one of the exits into Charlottesville and did two more runs there, one from second and one from first, both rolling starts. He EASILY spanked me in both of these. He even missed third on the run starting from first, and still spanked me. At the next light I told him to pull over so we could chat.

He and his buddy in the Accord pull over with me. Turns out he had a heavily internally modified Type R motor transplanted into his engine bay. They were estimating 200+ at the rear wheels, but had yet to test on a dyno. After seeing this I didn't feel nearly as bad. He may have had gears too because he went awfully fast through 1 2 and 3.

The guy looked very dissapointed when I told him that I had only changed the exhaust and certainly didn't gain any power from the mod. He thought my S was turbocharged.

Either way, thought I'd share.

Nice runs.

Couple statements:

1. 200+ whp isn't really impressive for a "heavily internally modified Type R motor".
2. I didn't know Civics had RWD.

Anyways, sounds like you had some fun.

1. 200 is the least they were expecting. I imagine it's quite a bit more than that. Another thing to consider is that I had 200+ pounds more in curb weight and I was at least 50 pounds heavier than him.

2. It was a HEAVILY modified civic. . I'm so used to typing RWHP...

What year civic? It makes world of difference. Sub 2000 lb EF wouldn't need any mods to keep up. EG's can be light and just as fast with simple bolt ons. EM's/EK's are heavier but still just as capable of with a little more work.

He also wouldn't need a shorter final drive, but if he had one then that's probably all he would have needed.

Sounds like you had a fun run though!!

It would have been more fun if I had beat him.

I am unsure which model year he was running. Just thinking back through the models I know of.

- New crazy dash
- Ugly hatch SI years
- Good looking SI years (99-2000?)
- Big headlights years
- Slim headlights and single side mounted headrests (sort of)

It was the last one.

EK = 96-00 Civics
EG = 92-95 Civics
EF = 88-91 Civics

or like this? (EG)
