The vette gets really good milage on the freeway because of its extremely tall 6th gear. In regular stop and go traffic, especially when you're somewhat aggresive on the gas, the MPG dropped from ~30 to 3.8 on my friends C5 according to his fuel calculator gizmo.

[QUOTE]Just for reference because I have no clue what the S gets. I get 32mpg on the highway. I average about 24.5 mpg overall because I like to drive it hard

My S get's a consistent 30 mpg (and a small fraction). That's with about 70% on the road and 30% in town. My Vette would get 28 on a trip but nothing close in town - more like 22.

Again, the only way I could feel better about this discussion is if we were comparing the S with a Porsche or Ferrari! I admit, I don't have the best car in the world. It's only one of the top 5?

Man, I missed this whole thread for a while.

Deegym, That supercharged S2k and I can race whenever you want e-mail me at corey_wells@yahoo.com and we'll set something up.

To all else, I have a regular run of the mill '01 C5. I have intake, headers, and exhaust. My car dynos at 335rwhp and 352lb/ft of torque with my mods. My first time out on the 1/4 mile track I ran a 12.9 at almost 111mph. This was when the car was bone stock. I'm happy with my regular C5 because I have the Heads-up display, all the interior goodies, and I can take my targa top off.

For reference, I went over to a buddy's house yesterday and we'll helped each other bleed our brakes. He has an 2001 red/black S2k. We bled our brake systems and then went and grabbed a bite to eat. We swapped cars and chased each other over there. I love the turn in of the S2k, it handles well and seems, feels, and is much smaller than my C5. I also like convertibles, so that was cool. Other than that, it had absolutely nothing on my C5. My friend, after we got to the restaurant, told me not to let him drive it anymore, it's too much fun and has too much power.

I like the S2k and it is a great car for the money, but it really doesn't compare to a C5. With the 0% rates right now, if you're in the market for a new car, you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice to not look at a C5.

I had a Del Sol and a '97 Prelude before I got my Vette. I was worried about GM's quality and all that jazz, but after having my car for over 16k HARD, HARD miles, it has held up extremely well and I'm very happy with the quality and how well the car is put together. No squeaks and I've redlined the LS1 motor probably 1000 times and it keeps coming back for more. I love it.

Elanderholm,

I corded the rear runflats and now have a good set of non-runflat tires, BFG g-force KDW's in stock C5 sizes (245 front, 275 rear), they're a world of improvement in ride/handling, and grip is improved as well. Only downside is if I get a flat, I'm in deep trouble.

If you're considering the Z06, you'll get a super set of tires straight from the factory. I would have gotten the Z06 tires, but they were pushing the limits of my stock C5 rims.

Another thing about quality, please don't talk trash about how the C5 is domestic, so it has crappy quality. While that may be the case in some models, the C5 is probably one of the best put together sports cars on the market. The S2000 and NSX are very high quality as well, in fact, they may have a bit better interior bit quality, but all the gizmos I have in my C5, I would gladly keep those in exchange for a cheap piece of plastic here and there. The NSX is a top notch automobile period, but I still smoke 99% of them roadracing and autocrossing.

Drive and look at the C5 before talking trash about it. I used to be a die hard import guy, but romping on my C5 for the past year or so has shown that GM has gotten the Corvette down. That said, I think mainstream automobiles, the imports are still better. That is why I drive an '88 Civic as a daily driver and am buying a '95 Civic tomorrow to replace my '88. The '88 has 140k and is still running perfectly, but I wanted a bit newer daily beater.

I don't know if this adds anything to your debate, however I raced my stock S2000 against three corvettes to date. And for those of you who hate street racing, one was at an offical drag strip. The first was a C5, black convertable, from 30-85 MPH and won. I believe it was an automatic. The other was a C4, black hardtop, not sure if it was an automatic or not. We raced at a dragstrip, an offical event. I lost barely in the quarter mile and was pulling up on him fast. I also have to add that was my worst run of the night and I got a horrible jump. Later that night I beat the vette's time by about .2 sec. The last was on my way to my wedding and I have a witness to this too. I race a C5, red convertible, not sure if it was an auto or not from 60-127 MPH. The C5 took off much quicker, however I ran him down and we were running dead even at 100. I don't know who would have won because I had to get off at an exit and had to slow down. It was a good race though.

I am not calling anyone a liar, but I am amazed by S owners who claim to have outrun Vettes. Starting from a roll doesn't surprise me, but from a dead stop - that does. I've never popped my clutch at any rpm on my S, so I've not really experienced what it will do. And maybe Vettes are like other cars - some are slower than others. I believe my former Vette would get the jump on my S, but I can't say what would happen above 100 mph. I had my Vette up to 130 once and it was wanting to go faster.

For me it would be a hard choice to pick one or the other. I have been blessed to experience both. Imagine how strange it would sound in some countries to be debating which car we will buy - A Vette or an S. Only in America! (Well, maybe Australia and Canada too?)

I will look to see if I can find the time slips from the drag strip that will show the times on both my stock S2000 (with a bad jump and a good jump) and the C4 vette. I will say this if you are in an S2000 and you want a good jump, you better launch at a minimum of 7000 RPM.
