Fun Race with S4 Wagon
This happened Sunday afternoon on Foothills Expressway heading North between Los Altos and Palo Alto. We had been in a bit of traffic for quite a few lights, but North of downtown Los Altos it cleared up. He was in front of me at the light with a BMW 740IL in the next lane. I figured if he goes fast enough to spring me I'd see if he was game. Sure enough, he takes off, I pull around and right when I'm about one car off his back bumper (in second doing about 35) I see this puff of black smoke so I knew it was on. Ran from 35 to about 105 and I managed to pull about a car length on him, so three car lengths total from 35 to 105. Just a nice steady reeling in. About what I expected, but very fun nonetheless. FWIW we each had one passenger, so it was a pretty good apples to apples race of these two cars stock. I did have my top down, but I doubt that made more than a half a car difference since we "only" ran up to 100ish. There is ~200 pound difference between the S4 wagon and sedan, so I imagine that race would be a bit closer against a stock sedan. No clue if he was manual or tip as my eyes were glued to the tach, but either way that is one wagon that I would not be embarrassed to drive.

Nice run. I live in Los Altos on Edith Avenue -- which is that last light before the long stretch of open road to Arastadero. Don't ask how fast I have driven on Foothill (only with no other cars though). I did race a Sunbeam Tiger there once. Pretty quick car but the guy totally cut me off when we ran up on another car. That cooled me to racing for a while.
I love leaving my house to go to Palo Alto and getting a traffic free run up Foothill after I turn right. As long as my V1 is on, not too worried about the occassional cop. That is a pretty safe place to run but it is often blocked by someone doing about 42mph.
I was walking my dog once along Foothill park and I see this Supra and Z28 revving each other between Main Street and Edith. They lined up at that same light and took off for Palo Alto. I think the Supra had a car before they were out of sight.
Sounds about right for the S4. They don't have tons of high rpm power and most of their 1/4 mile times are achieved in the first 1/8 mile. I have ran a chipped one from 45 to about 120mph with lots of extra weight in my car (4 track wheels, jack and tools) and we were dead even. Yuk, yuk...
