Oh yeah, this is the same GTP that beat a CL-S from a stop and a roll...

Check out honda-acura.net/kill stories for the topic: CL-S vs. GTP

If car A and car B are relatively close in terms of horsepower and they differ by the transmission then often the automatic-eqipped car will win. It's simply a matter of conditions. If I race someone, I'm usually cautious at first launch - I feel like a dork squealing my tires and roaring off only to have my 'opponent' mosey along at the speed limit. Therefore, unless you are launching at 6-7k rpm (most people probably wouldn't to avoid attention) and dropping the clutch to get proper tire slip (most wouldn't to save the clutch) then you are going to find yourself behind against a car with more torque. Can an S2K beat a CL-S or GTP? Absolutely. If you are willing to rev it to 7k and drop the clutch. I haven't got the stomach for that, and most owners won't treat their cars to that kind of abuse.

When you are talking about a car as delicate to launch as an S2000, you have to be prepared...it's that simple. You also have to have no fear. When your tires are new and cold you will not get 0-60 in 5.2, nor will you get it if you drop the clutch at any other point than when the tires stop spinning you're in VTEC. If your tires have less than a quarter inch tread...forget it. If your tire pressure is at 40psi...forget it. You have to remember that getting this car to do good numbers in a drag race is all but an art, it's not easy. Listen to Sev , he'll set you straight and you'll murder that Merc the next time.

I suggest you get used to your car before you attempt to put your cars reputation online. Try dropping the clutch at around 6500 RPM's in an empty parking lot. After you get comfortable you won't have a problem smoking most opponents.

An automatic S2000 for which I will have to pay for the option. Not a likely purchase. If I want an automatic I'll get the CL-S or someother thing. I like the 6-speed even if I usually don't need 5th & 6th.

When I got together with 2kturkey to do some G-tech runs we did good 1/2 dozen off-idle (ie. low revs) launches. All together we did at least 10 0-100kph (0-62mph) runs and best we managed was 7.3 (or was it 7.4). More often than not the time was about ~7.6 - 7.8 ... we even got one that was 8.0.

That means that a 0-60mph time 'off-idle' can be anywhere between 6.7 and 7.5 secs .... that will put you a fair way behind a CL-S even when you hit the end of 2nd gear.

ps. When using a 'high-revs' launch (7.5k), we were cutting the time by good 1.5sec.

Thanks for all of the feed back. . . Since I'm pretty sure I don't have the stomach for 7K drops, I'll stick to rolling starts

Incidentally, Saturday (8/18) I was driving the S2000 on the route 3 east (near Giants Stadium), a guy in a CL-S (silver) and an Accord Coupe (red) were "getting it on". I was watching the action in my rearview mirror, until they got near me. I down shifted to 4th and was out. . . Both cars hung close until about 100, they I began to walk away. . . I shut it down at about 120, I had opened a significant gap between us. . . I'm definitely sticking to rolling starts. . .
