F1Tech is right.....

Ford should have kept the Probe. That is one of the best looking cars of the mid & late 90s. They would have never sold another Mustang if they would have made it a real driver's sports car. All they needed to do was make it RWD or AWD, drop in the 4.6L V8 from the GT/Cobra, a 6-speed, and maybe 17" wheels, and they would have created a monster. Then it would have the power, handling, etc. a car that good-looking really deserves. The handling, feel, and physical looks of that car are amazing, but it could never compete with the of the Mustang's heritage or marketing campaigns the way they sold it (with 164hp & FWD in the GT/GTS models).

I had an old school mustang(mid-late 80's) rev on me.... while I was behind a semitruck... wtf?!?! I've seen the car before, very heavily modified... 5.0 I believe... he dropped and went flying away, so I changed lanes, VTECed it, and kept with him. I know his car is faster than mine and that I wouldn't be able to beat him, but he was very surprised that I was pretty much keeping with him... the expressions of the two girls in the back of his car was priceless... mmm, good times... I wasn't really racing him, we ended up going the same route that I always do to go home, i just stayed with him, and smiled all the way... gotta love honda.... no replacement for displacment? tell that to my 1.6l honda engine that packs a mean punch.

In my opionon, the Mustang GTs are 'cheap horsepower'

They are fast all right but
But with the 4.6 V8, they should be faster in my opinion.

Well you certainly are entitled to your opinion as I am mine and disagree with you. A fully loaded GT can be had for 22k fully loaded.....Please explain what you people that keep repeating "cheap horsepower"???????? Do you expect build quality of a BMW OR BENZ. I would really like to know.

Just to play devil's advocate (I am a former S2K owner and really don't like Mustangs except for the Cobra)...

What if Mustang owners took your statement and revised it a little...

something like "But for 32k, they (S2000) should be faster in my opinion"...

once again, I love the S2000... But you gotta look at it from different angles... The S2000 isn't god's gift to the automotive world, as nice as it indeed is...

The Mustang is just plain cheap. Forget about the cheap horsepower moniker. Sure it has alot of "bang for the buck" but that can be taken two ways.

1) Lots of power for relatively few dollars
2) A poorly built car on 22 year old Fox-body underpinnings. Man that car has ridiculous flex...in a hardtop!!! Weak handling, vibrates like a monster, has the resale of a used rusting Pinto, and "bangs" around alot with several squeaks and rattles.

To pay more than 20k for that car is f'n ridiculous! The convertible should be just banned...with the pathetic flex of that car...yeesh!

Try the convertible test on one of those. That is, put that car on a twist (going up a driveway etc.) get out of the car and see if you can close the door. You won't be able to because the chassis has flexed so baaaaad.

I would have loved one when I was 16 just to do burnouts and stuff. But couldn't deal with the crap quality today.

I totally agree, the quality isn't there... But in a lot of ways, my 32000 dollar S2000's quality was well short of something cheaper from Honda (like my mom's 97 Civic Coupe that has never been to the dealer for anything, period).

My S2000 had to go in for

1) exhaust shield rattle
2) clutch noise
3) power window that didn't always want to go down with the auto feature
4) water pump
5) various little rattles (not a big deal to me)
6) transmission that would sometimes not shift from 1-2 at higher speeds

by comparison, my 99 Corvette coupe went to the dealer for routine oil changes and once for a dead battery (my fault).

the Vette had ZERO rattles.

In the end, I'd still love to have either car. But I've heard plenty of horror stories of other Vettes being lemons. At this point, I'd still own another Vette or another S2000...

Looking further down the line, I'd much rather own a Civic than a Cavalier

point is that while some think that Honda is the end all of all end alls in quality, my experience with the S2000 did not support this...

All manufacturers have their high points and low points... With Ford though, the quality seems to be more low than high... With Honda, its been more high than low... based on that reputation, its clear to see which brand would be more desireable (logically speaking).

My girlfriend currently leases a 2001 325i and its quality has been fabulous. Never been to the dealer for anything except the cool stuff they invite us to... I'm sure we've all heard about bad BMW quality as well, right?

Lets not forget that this thread was about killing a Mustang... nothing to do with quality, but about who got to the finish line first...

I'll admit the guy in the 5.0 needs a reality check, because those older 5.0s are really horrible in the interior quality and ergonomics department...

I have seen a new GT (un-modified) run a 13.7-13.8 at Gainesville Raceway. It was actually John Gullit's brother and for those of you that don't know who John Gullit is. He's the fastest Mustang in his class in this country. Can't remember what class it is but he runs 7's in the 200+mph range.
