late model RX7
So I was on my way to work this morning, driving east on 580 (from San Francisco to Pleasanton) and passed a late model RX7 (the last one to come to the US) going about 85. If I remember correctly that car only has one engine choice, which is the potent 2 rotor, turbo charged 1.6 or 1.8l, right? Anyway, it's riced out with a huge spoiler on the trunk, lowered, etc. Next thing I know this guy pulls up alongside and and slightly accelerates which of course caught my attention. I down shift in 4th, then 3rd and he steps on it. Actually I think he downshifted and then stepped on it as a huge puff of smoke billowed out of the tail pipe. Of course I gun it. By the time we hit 95, we started off around 80, I have to lift off so I don't rear end him. I was able to pull into the next lane and just stepped on it again. By the time we hit 120, where I stopped pushing it, he's way behind, and remember I had to lift and then stomp on it again, maybe 3 car lengths.
I thought that car was suppose to be fast. What has the experience been on this board? Maybe the puff of smoke was due to a aging, overworked, tired engine.
Any experiences running against RX7's?

actually its a 1.3l engine um the rotor engine do have alot of problems but alittle black smoke is normal but a big puff of smoke something is wrong. a 93 rx-7 wit ha good set of tires and rim size can run a low 13. my friend in his rx7 ran a 13.3 with just rims and tires.
They can be dangerous if well modded...I guess you just encountered a ricey one, one that had big exhaust tip, huge wing, CAI, rims and lowered...you know, typical ricer...
I am sorry guys, but I have had two Series 6 RX7's before my S2000, and you are dreaming if you think the S2000 can match it with a good "well tuned" stock RX. As much as I luv my S2k, driving that twin turbo'd rotary monster was "hard on " material.
These things are temperamental though and they need to be well tuned. This one obviously wasnt. Usually it would do the quarter reliably with low 13's.
I eventually sold mine because it was starting to cost me a pretty penny in maintenance. My warranty expired.
