The "Miata Effect"
I had a Miata before the S. In the Miata it always seemed like I was letting her rip, but you really needed to so you could stay ahead of SUV's etc. Most SUV's usually thought they could take me, but the Miata wasn't that slow. I have to say that in the S I have noticed a lot of hot cars hanging far back, as if to make it perfectly clear that they are not challenging. I have had a few cars pull up out of no where to check me out, like a Boxster, Vet, and a few other nice cars. My wife has recently started driving the S too and now she is reporting car encounters as well.
I was recently on the TGPR track with a supercharged Miata & found it to be fairly quick in the straights, but I could still catch him.
An instructor with an "A" spec Miata was very fast with only just over 100rwhp. He wasn't fast on the straights, but he was fast everywhere else.

see i thought the miata effect was something else. Like one time i was on the highway cruising with the top down and i see this miata fly up from behind me and pull next to me, the guy made some hand gesures, a wavy a thumbs up and another wave. So i was like uhhhh ok and then the guy took off. The back of his yellow miata was covered with gay pride and rainbow stickers

he probably thought you were gay and was signaling for you to follow him for a wild night on the town
Well, maybe I did experience the Miata Effect this morning. On the way to work, I kept getting tail gated by a truck which obviously had a V-8, with the nice sounding pipes, wheels and so forth. I really didn't notice the brand, Ford/Chevy, something like that. I had tried to get away from him a time or 2, but he didn't go away. At a red light, I was in the right lane and he pulls up in the left. At that point I am thinking, just let this D.A. go, but when the light turns green, he guns it. I am just sitting there in disbelief that this truck is thinking he can take me. I had a vision of him sitting at Fat Boy's BBQ telling his friends how he dusted a ricer, so after he had a full length or so on me, I gunned it. It only took up till second gear for me to be looking in my rear view trying to find him. He didn't bother me anymore. I never even got into Vtech territory which wasn't necessary, but still blasted him pretty good. What is the deal with guys in big trucks who think they are fast? I know this is not a real race, even though he may have thought so. If I had been in the family Accord 4 banger, maybe we would have had a real race.
I'm not sure these people who try to race the S2000 even know their asses from their elbos about cars and wouldn't know what a Miata was if you rolled up next to them in one. Seriously underestimating the S2000's performance and thinking it's a Miata are two different things. I think it's more of an attitude, "Wow, look at that car. He must think he's cool, but I bet my car is faster." rather than, "I bet I can beat that Miata.". I've had people think my Miata was a BWM, Porsche, Toyota MR-S, and the best one was someone thought it was a Viper. People who know a car is slower than theirs tend not to bother. At least I don't. I tend to try picking on ones I know would be a good match so I can think I accomplished something after winning.
