Mongoose
Well, I've been prompted to describe another kill (got a few more, being a new forum subscriber, I'll need to catch up to all you killers out there).
I've been beat by newer model cobras on the freeway several times. Everytime, I wished that I had been more in the S2K's element. Well, one morning in the mountains of San Diego, I got my chance.
I drive the SD mts. on a fairly regular basis. I occasionally see some S2Ks, Porsches an Alpine Tiger once, and various other sportscars. I do it early morning to avoid the tourists.
One morning, I'm tooling around, and to my delight, I see a Mustang about a mile or two ahead of me. I instantly took off after him, expecting at most a GT or some such, and an easy kill.
As I got closer, I noticed that my prey was indeed an SVT Cobra, and he was game to say the least. He took off and I was on the throttle, him pulling away on the straights and me reeling him in nicely on the corners.
I knew we were approaching a two lane section of road and that at the top of the hill there would be a real high speed gut check; a two lane elongated right-hand corner (that ends back into a one lane) that most casual folks probably take at about 40.
We hit the two lane section and he was *gone*. I had a real tough time staying in striking distance, but somehow managed to do so. At the point where preparation for the turn needed to occur, I was approx. 200 ft behind him, with the Cobra in the outside "fast" lane.
The brake peddle was the last thing on my mind. Needless to say I was spurned to be even more aggressive when I saw him hit the brakes. My mind's eye must been smiling from ear to ear, but to be honest I don't remember a lot about the turn except that I passed him on the inside at 118mph just in time to take pole position when the road went back to a one laner.
We continued on, kinda playing cat and mouse with me in the lead. It was clear who had the faster car, but with the corners and nature of the road it was impossible for him to pass. Going on a ways, he turned into Poway, and I headed on to Scripps Ranch Road. Those of you who know Scripps Ranch Road from highway 67 know that that would have been an epic battle (fast downhill two lane road with fast turns)!
Ever since then, I've known I've got a mongoose in the garage.
Incidentally, I did the same thing against a sportbike on the same patch of road. Much to the horror of my golf buddy passenger!
