Raced a Boxster S
As in, I drove it in a time trial. The owner drove my S2000 at the same event. At then end we switched back for some fun runs. The S2000 is stock except for x-brace and R4S pads. The S is stock except for Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 street tires.
First of all, if you're looking for a high performance tire, don't get the Kumhos. They're nice on the street and highway, but they're pretty slick when pushed. More than anything else, I believe the tire situation was the biggest difference between the two cars.
The Boxster exhibited quite a bit of understeer. It was difficult to really get it around some of the corners, or get it to the apex cone. Coming out of corners, it wasn't too difficult to get the tail to wag. Fortunately, recovery was quite easy. The S is way too quiet. I had a hard time telling just what the engine was doing - made heal-toe downshifts a bit guessy. The car feels different from the S2000 for two main reasons - the drive-by-wire throttle, and the Active Brake Differential. The Boxster doesn't have an LSD, but ones equipped with traction control will, if it detects a rear wheel slipping, will apply the brakes briefly to that particular wheel. I could feel it happening - at first I thought traction control came back on - and it seemed to help in the way an LSD would, and finally I don't think it hurt my times any.
The only thing the car is lacking is race tires, a loud exhaust and some more supportive seats.
The S2000 is loud. I love it! And the OEM S02's grip like crazy. It's nicely balanced. It'll drift neutrally, and it'll understeer or oversteer if provoked. All the movements are much smaller than the S - clutch, shifter and steering. In their current incarnations, the S2000 is faster. My best was 90.0sec, and the S2000 did 86.2. With S02's or equivalent, I could have shaved several seconds off my time, but then again the other driver has been racing since about as long as I've been alive. We'll be getting our fun-run times later on, it'll be interesting to see how we did when we got back in our own cars.
