Return of the 7th gen B16A
Well well well. I had to run to autozone to get headlights for my fiancee's 2000 civic. When I stopped in, I noticed a familiar looking 7th gen civic in the parking lot. It was green, and had DOHC VTEC on the side (same stickers as on the 6th gen Si/SiR) and the "Si" badge on the back. I have had a run in with this guy before, but wasn't able to really comment at the time since I was in a hurry.
With a
on my face, I walk into the store. The last time I ran into this guy, I had a civic Si. I obviously now have a much meaner beast. I also remembered that the owner was some guy who was like 18 and his dad was the manager of this particular parts store.
Me: So you still have those stickers on your car I see.
Kid: What do you mean?
Me: The Si and DOHC stickers you have on your car. You shouldn't put stickers for things on your car that you don't have.
Kid: But it has that engine in it.
Me: what engine? The B16A?
Kid: yeah... from a 2000 civic. (at this point daddy walks over, seemingly hearing our conversation)
Dad: We bought that car in Arizona from a shop that put the 2000 Civic Si engine in it.
Me: (to self: Thanks for confirming my thought that you are a moron. Time to tear you apart like the little girl you are) Okay, so my thoughts weren't that, but I had the moron part right......
Me: So how did they get the engine to mount properly with your civic tranny?
Dad: They put the tranny and engine from a 2000 Si into it.
Me: Right. That's an expensive transplant. Not to mention more than likely impossible due to the fact that the engine mounts are almost completely opposite what they should be.
Dad: Well we paid $24,000 for it.
Me: I'm sure it's an expensive modification. So how did you find a shop willing to do it?
Dad: What?
Me: Well it's illegal to put an older engine into a newer car. If a particular engine was ceased in production in 2000, you can't put it into a new type of car that was made in 2001.
Dad: Well it's a 2001 engine.
Me: I thought you said it was a 2000 Civic Si engine?
Kid: No, it was a 2001.
Me: They didn't made a B16A civic Si in 2001.
Kid: Well they must have cuz that's where the engine came from.
Me: No they didn't. How about you let me see under the hood.
Dad: Well I'm closing so you can come see it next time.
Damn... and I didn't even get to pick up her headlights.
I'm pretty sure on the whole legal engine thing... I don't remember where I read it, but I do believe it's federal law. Has to do with safety or something like that. That doesn't mean people don't do it, but I think it doesn't apply to collector's cars?? I forget. Either way, the guy has no clue what he's talking about.... and I will be hunting him down for a little race.
