Default S vs. WRX

My best friend has a 2006 wrx (not sti) modded with aem ram air intake, and some ecu thing that cost him $700, no idea what its called but he says its supposed to make power.

I have a 03 ap1, K&N FIPk, comptech header on stock exhaust at the time (no tune)

I have a passenger and top down, he has 3 passengers.

We go from a roll, i cant remember which speed, i was in 2nd gear and about 4.5kish rpms, we honk and take off, he pulls immediately on me about half a car length but stay even with me the rest of the way through fourth for me when i shut down. Passenger in my car said i was slowly pulling on him after the start but ive had this happen about 3 or 4 times.

Any speculation on this? from what ive seen on the boards people are keeping up with sti's i figured i should smoke a wrx especially when he has 3 other people in the car

Im a decent driver too, granted i dont like shifting right at redline, i usually shift around 8.5-8.8k

The AEM intakes don't require MAF scaling like some others. Still you 'should' pull on a stage 1 wrx. Even tuned (although I'm not sure why anyone would get a protune before at least a DP), he shouldn't be making more than 210 whp, and he weighs 3200lbs...

He probably got a SPT exhaust stock. You wouldn't know if had a DP or not unless he told you or you knew what to look for because it stays quite with that exhaust. Point being if he bought the AP new he could have the DP for the same price is the intake. He knew to buy the CObb instead of a MBC so he had to know that the dp was a better buy he could have easily rocking a stg. 2 set up in a 06 with 224awhp and 270wtq or a custom map pushing almost 300wtq and u wouldn't know. That would be more logical if he had 3 people in the car. Again I am speculating.

no. you should have rocked his world.

from the roll, i hung with STI`s in stock form.
you should pull away like crazy esp. with 3 passengers in his car.

next time ,
1. top UP
2. no passengers both cars
3. little more than 2/3 gas
4. start at 6.5 or 7 rpms (you dont want to start under vtec or even at 6,000)
5. REDLINE!

Reason 1 you lost. Never start a race out of VTEC. Never...period.

If you had started the race being in VTEC, he probably wouldn't have gotten the jump on you.

Reason 2 you lost. This car makes ALL its power between 6k to 9k. If you shift early at all, you are leaving the door open to lose.

If you had shifted at redline, you probably would have reeled him in more quickly.
