Default Some runs through the twisties

Ok to start off- my AP1 is stock, spare removed, on 205/225 AVS ES100 tires, which don't perform very well. My rear tires should also be 245s, and I did experience a lot of oversteer.

I am sitting parked at my usual run spot. to describe it: there is a good drag strip, longer than 1/4 of a mile of dead straightaway on a backroad that doesn't get much traffic at night. Right after this, there is a small twistie run with about 6 or 7 corners that is fun to run back and fourth. I am parked inbetween the two runs, right where we would start either a drag or twistie.

So I am sitting there, anxiously waiting for my friend with his GSR. I look down the "drag strip" and see a pair of HID's coming quickly down the road. He stops right next to me, waiting to run through the twisties. I can see that its a Maxima, sounds like a V6, obviously has coilovers, wheels, exhaust. This could definatly be fun, so I fire up the S2K, and flash the brights. He pulls in front and I pull out behind him, ready to run. His hazards flash and we are both off.

I get to 2nd gear before the first corner- a posted 15mph corner. We both enter at about 50mph and both get a little oversteer as we power out of the corner. I am keeping up right behind him. A small straight away and then the next sign comes up, a 25mph corner. We brake a bit and enter at about 55mph, powering out keeping all traction. The section after this is just a windy road, back and fourth, left and right corners that are pretty high speed. I keep on the throttle the whole section, keeping up with him. We pull to the end of the road, turn around and decide to run it again coming from the other direction.

First up is the windy section, where I keep it on the throttle again, staying about a 1 and 1/2 carlength behind him. The next corner comes and I enter too hot and oversteer, which slows me down a bit as I had to countersteer to get the rear to snap back. I end up about 2 cars behind him at the straight. The last few corners come up, and we keep at about the same distance.

We pull up to the "parking spot" and chat at the open road. We decide to do a drag run as I am still waiting for my friend.

We pull up even to each other and he motion to have me honk 3 times. I rev it to about 4k rpms just to help me get off quicker without a launch. I hear his car reving pretty high. At the third honk we are both off. He launched too high and got a lot of tire spin. I didn't launch, and had to go through 6krpms of slowness, so we stayed about dead even off the line. He shifts (chirps second) right after when I hit VTEC and I pulled a little on him- he was at my rear fender. It stayed this way through 2nd gear and when I shifted to 3rd I pulled a bit more. By 100mph I had about 1 1/2 car lengths on him.

We pull back to our "parking spot" and chat some more. After about 5 min I hear my friends loud ass GSR come busting through the twisties, tires screeching and his exhaust roaring. He pulls up to us and we talk a little and decide to drag first.

Me and the GSR start it off. The Maxima honked us off. I decided not to launch again, and just held it at 4krpms. I hear his engine reving up. 3rd honk- we are dead even up untill we both hit VTEC, and I pull a little. Every gear a pull more and end up with about 2 cars on him by 100.

Next run is the Maxima and the GSR. I honk them off. I didn't get a good view of this race. I saw the Maxima launch well and get a great start. I am pretty sure the Maxima won, not sure how many lengths.

Next, me and the GSR decide to run through the twisties. I was pretty sure he was going to beat me because he is simply a crazy driver. I start off leading, flash the hazards and we are off. He can keep with me most of the race, and nothing really special happened so I won't describe it too much.

He lead next race and could pull a little on me. He had about 3 cars on me at the end of the race.

The Maxima V6 had bolt ons, straight exhaust, suspension work (I know coilovers at least, probably sways), on Kuhmo MX tires that seemed to be low on tread.

The GSR had suspension (at least coils), bolt ons including full straight exhaust.

Next thing I am going to do is get tires. With stock S02s I am sure I can increase my corner speeds by at least 5mph. I was thinking about getting a front sway bar and then running 225/245 tires also.

Next time we will get a video going. This weekend we are going to do some touge on a different road so hopefully we can catch that.

i am probably the worst person to say this as i do street race often, but running the touge on public roads is just stupid. you NEVER, EVER, know whats around the corner. a person jogging, deer, dog, family in a suv(worse for you than them most likely).

keep it safe bro!

My thoughts exactly...

Run on the highway in the middle of the night isn't exactly safe, but running the backroads like that is asking for trouble (especially at night)

Its not blind at all- like I said its a really short road, and its not a touge- its just around some hills. me. At the start, you can see about half of the road. Once you get to the second straight you could see any cars coming in the opposite direction.

We never encountered traffic once on the twisties.

We had to wait for a couple of cars to pass when we were going to drag.

Usually when I run the touge its just a cruise, not really a race. We get a train of cars to just go for a ride. If we are going to race, we will send someone in the direction we are headed to and call to make sure no traffic is ahead.

I almost hit a rabit on this road once. This isn't a road someone would jog on as there are no sidewalks on the twistie part. There are also no homes close enough that someone would come out at night. No deer out here as its a construction zone with nothing for them to live off of.

I can make excuses for everything, but yes it is still dangerous. If we have someone make sure there is no opposite traffic it is a bit safer- but you still are raising the limits of your car on a road not prepped for it. It will always be a risk, and it is stupid.

Yes, there used to be this real nutter on 9 in Norcal, apparently he was clocked at triple digit speeds at some points. Many a viper has met its maker on this stretch of road. Last thing you want to do is be at the ragged edge, suspension fully loaded, and see..........................................bambi .

Well its not that hard hitting 100mph on some of the straigts on HW9. I actually had a few runs today and had a great time with a couple of bikes and an Evo 8- neither of which could quite hang in the corners, though the bike ate me up in the straights.
