Default Thinking about getting a Vette!

Glen, Shizon, other vette lovers

I am looking at a 2k2 Red/Black Coupe A4. about $42,000 the guy said (fair?)

What are the numbers(0-60,1/4,top end) like stock...and with bolt ons. Also is the auto a good choice for racing (street)?

Any reason I should get a 6sp instead?
Do I want the performance axle ratio?

Thanks

Interesting...

Really it depends on what you mean by street racing. If most of your races are from a stop or at the track (not really street racing I guess) then the auto is a good choice. If they are roll on's, get the 6 speed.

If you get an auto, don't get the 3.15's because you're just going to get rid of them and get 3.42's or even higher when you do the torque converter. You'll pay $300 for the option now or just pay $500 for a good set of used 3.42's out of a 6 speed later. Save your money and get the 3.42's and Yank Torque Converter later. That alone is good for mid 12's on street tires.

I'll let Glen field the 6 speed questions though.

So the base 2.73 FD I think, is still decent?

When I say street racing, I mean stoplight to 60-70 and some highway runs 60-70-120,130 or so.

For the most part I'd say get the Auto and then add a torque converter and the 3.42 rear gear set. The car will be an absolute stop light TERROR.

It will absolutely destroy damn near anything you come across including Porsche's, SC'd and Turbo'd S2K's ... well the list is very very long so I won't bother detailing them all.

I prefer the stick for performance applications but I must admit that with the torque converter and a set of 3.42's the auto is SERIOUSLY hard to beat off the line. You'd be absolutely AMAZED at the performance. If the performance of the S2K in anyway impresses you I personally guarantee you that these mods in an Automatic Vette will ASTOUND you.

Point of reference with CAI and these 2 mods the car will run 12.20 (or better) at the track. I went 12.08 with an identical set up.

Obviously I feel very strongly that the Vette is a fantsatic all around performer that is almost impossible to beat.

Wow 12.2s with gears and a converter

How does this affect the warrenty?

What kind of costs are we talking about for these parts? installed?

I really love the s2k.

But growing up my Dad always had a least one Vette. So it has only been my "Dream" car.

In fact my first car was to be a 65 396/425, 97pt car

He sold it though

Obnoxious dyed in the wool old school guy chimes in.

Nothing wrong with a Vette. They're beautiful and truth be told, if I could afford one, I'd buy a Z06 in a heartbeat.

But please, please, please don't buy the auto. I won't argue for a second about how fast the auto can be in a straight line and even how much easier it might be for Joe Avg. to go stoplight to stoplight that way. But automatic sports cars are sacriledge, IMO.

The C5 Corvettes handle very well and imagine the thrill of executing a perfect downshift prior to lunging into that corner. Now picture yourself with a lame-o slush box and how all the hands on approach to driving is taken away.

Buck the trend, buy a stick.

PS - no offense meant to anyone driving an auto Vette or other car. To each his own, I'm only giving my opinion. An no, I don't want to race You'd probably blow my doors off
