You're gonna need an upgraded turbo if you want to beat the best hybrids. And if they're turboed hybrids, you're going to need NOS too. heh. Hybrids are light, it takes less hp to make them fast.

Most BPU GTI's(chip, full exhaust, intake) run in the 14.0~14.5 area. However, we have a few guys running 13.5~14.0 area, so yeah.......a chip makes a huge difference. The latest version of the 1.8t is coded AWP. A guy just a couple of days ago ran a 14.03@99.5mph with JUST a chip, so he will be in 13's very soon. The average wheel hp for 01 & 02 chipped Jetta/GTI 1.8ts when BPUed is about 195whp, but we have many people making about 204whp...........so they are pretty fast

Yah, I just sat in on the tuning of a 2.0 liter Turbo Civic yesterday. At 8 psi on pump gas it put down 320 hp to the wheels - and outside of the wheels, mild drop and exhaust, it looks and sounds stock till he punches it. Can't really get it hooked on street tires till mid 3rd gear. On drag radials its a monster. 2500 lbs with driver, 320 to the wheels and a fat torque curve.

Not from my experience. The b18c1 hatch is considerably faster than the B16s.

The GSR motor puts out 10 more hp than the B16a2. With boltons that difference grows even more, as the larger displacement allows for more gains.

Oh...ok. My bad
[QUOTE]I guess it just has to do with the motor or how the hybrid was built.

My .02, if you can get a 1.8T GTI with minor mods to run low 14s to high 13s and still have full interior and look stock, I think that would be a much better set-up than a gutted/motor swapped hatch....once you do the motor swap (for a simple GSR/B16A2 conversion), it would seem that one could have bought the 1.8T for the same cash it took for the swap and have a bit more to spend for the chip and got the same times...I guess that is considering having to pay for the labor involved in the swap.

Yeah chipped 1.8Ts are sweet cars, you have the luxury, refinement and a lot of Go power for such a car. If I had to buy a new car now it would probably be it.

But if you think it will take less money to own a chipped 1.8T as opposed to your regular hybrid hatch, you've got some rethinking to do.

A good condition 95' CX hatch can be had for about 4000 dollars, 2500 dollars in not so great condition.

GSR motor and tranny 3500 dollars
JUN 3 CAMS, valvetrain and and reprogrammed ECU: $3500

Swap labor and costs: 1800.

That car will run very low 13s no prob with no weight reduction.

Total: $12800 at the most, far below the cost of a stock 1.8T.

Let's get back to earth now.
