I agree. Thats how aftermarket keys are made. By cloning the factory key.

Here is the machine they have at Lowe's. They start the key duplication at 1:06

But what about genuine OEM Honda blank keys? Aren't those writable/re-programmable?

I have one (genuine oem Honda) that isn't cut nor programmed yet for Ap1.

Just to update this thread, I did get the eBay key (see link) programmed for my 2005 (AP2). I got it done at a locksmith for $35 bringing the car and all the keys I had. He brought out his "machine" that hooked up to the OBD port and he simply put each key in the ignition turned it on and maybe pressed a button the machine. Took a total of about 3 minutes.

Just letting you everyone know that the eBay key worked fine so I would assume the AP1 key from the same seller should work as well.

I was able to get one cut and programmed from my local honda for $55. Other honda dealer or blacksmith wanted 100+ when i called around. So my local honda said $55 and all i need is to bring in the master key or a key that would open the doors and start the car. They will make me a t5 key! Got it done and works perfect. Been using the t5 key and put away my master key. So try asking how much to make a t5 copy key

Honda OEM keys are not programmed/writable if they are "Master". The OEM keys already contain information in the chip (let's call it a serial number). You pay to have your ECU add the key's serial number. I believe Honda also makes a clone of your key referenced as "T5". Not sure which cars this works for. The one at the hardware store, creates a clone of your existing key.

I created a DIY with info about programming the immobilizer for new keys if you're curious.
