Absolutely run this calim through your insurance company. It's a COMPREHENSIVE claim, it is not a COLLISION claim as long as there is deer evidence on the car. Your rates will not be effected by a comprehensive claim, these are "acts of god" and they are beyond your control. Honestly speaking, it's good you hit the deer, the people who get screwed are the ones who swerve to miss the deer, then crash the car without hitting the stupid forest rodent. They then have no proof, and it becomes a collision claim, not a comprehensive claim.

The last one I hit was with the Titan, $4,500 worth of damage. Notice how the Titan took a bite out of the deer's hide. When I realized there was no way to avoid the hit, I made sure the deer was going to leave a mark.

As others have said and not more, you must be near the city where you have 3 or more travel lanes.

I am rarely on a highway with more than 2 lanes. That being said all you have is the breakdown lane as your safety buffer. Even at a speed of 55 a deer on the run can put you in a situation where there is nothing you can do but hit it.

I have narrowly missed dear plenty of times, by the time you see it and react its often too late. Call it being "relaxed" or what you want. But if you think I'm going to spend my highway time driving on DEFCON 1 alert mode you have got to be crazy.

i don't understand why you are posting. the guy is asking for advice on how to take care of his claim, he's not asking if you think he's at fault. anybody who's ever hit a deer (and most everyone else) knows that in normal conditions, if you hit a deer, it's the deer's fault. the questions you're asking are irrelevant, because if there are signs on your car that you've hit a deer, the insurance company usually doesn't care what time it was, how many lanes the highway had, or if you were close to the shoulder.

also, the plural of deer is not deers.

Yeah it's hunting/mating season right now so there are gonna be a lot of deer on the move. My step-dad was coming home the other night and there were 8 in the road and two of them didn't even move, he ended up having to drive around them while they stared at the truck.

Sorry to hear about the accident, I hate to say it but if there is a corpse go take a picture of it for more proof. Can't hurt.

100%... I've lived in Texas, North Carolina (right outside of Charlotte), where you had to drive twisty backroads to get to the subdivision, and now in Utah (where I carve canyons every other day) ...When its nighttime, I ALWAYS drive in the middle lanes if I'm on the freeway... living in those 3 states, you always see deer/armadillos/racoons/coyote/squirrels jumping out into the roads... And I've never hit a single animal ...well, an Armadillo hit me, I saw him, slammed on my brakes, he ran out of the way, and then turned around and ran straight into my bumper... I was laughing my butt off, until I got out and saw that it cracked my bumper LOL

Have you ever driven in the night regardless of what lane your in? You really cant see your surroundings besides the lane your in and maybe the next. You have maybe a good 10-15ft width with your lights. Now, going 55mph and a deer jumping out in front is not enough time regardless of what lane your in to dodge it. Whatever lane your in, it's the same outcome if a deer was to jump out really. And one more thing, there is no blame on the driver at all. A deer jumped out on him... instinct is he tried to dodge it but that deer just jumped out too close and still got hit. Its one of those crazy occurrences that you just don't expect to happen to you. Even if he was on the right lane, you can't blame him for that. I drive on the right lane so it doesn't look like I'm going faster then the speed limit or just to cruise. Since he was going 55mph, it was just cruising. Why go in the middle or left lane with other cars that are speeding. The people to blame is maybe the government. With all these taxes we pay, they cant put up a fence or something to prevent deers running across. Don't blame the driver for driving on the right side of a highway when your allowed to.
Ok, done talking. Don't mean to attack you sparrow, but you have to understand the whole picture and not just one. Not trying to start a war here.
