Mine is just a little notchiness when cold, no grinding. And I don't consider it to be a problem.

hm. I have had the problem with 2nd too, when it's cold. If you double clutch the upshift, it goes in smoothly for me, definitely a problem with the synchros. gonna wait a few months and if it gets worse, take it into honda. My 00 did this too for the first month or so and then stopped.

My gearbox is a tad notchy in first or second gear on cold mornings, but once I've gone more than a block or two it seems fine.

It also seems to be getting better with some miles (up to 1800+ now).

I have about 1400mi on mine and it has never popped out of gear. I let it warm up on my way out of the (hood) 2nd no more than 3k rpm. It takes about 3 min and then smooth. I do notice it stopes at 1 bar temp for a while then goes straight to 3 or 4 bars in about the same time.

Had several occasions when I let the clutch out and the car went forward a bit then a loud clunk and the car stopped. Had to put the shifter back into 1st as it had popped out. I have so far attributed it to operator error. The shift travel is so short that the difference between fully engaged and not quite is only several millimeters. I have been more deliberate lately and the problem has not recurred. (700 miles)

Mercede,

My 04 is about three weeks old with about 700 or so miles. I ALSO have a bad grind on the 1-2 shift until I have driven for a while (probably 10 - 15 minutes). As a partial solution, I simply never shift aggressively until the car is fully warm. And for all of your apparent doubters, yes, it is a full on GRIND. I am well aware of the "notchiness" of the tranny when cold. The "notchiness" does NOT make loud noises when you shift rapidly.

After 10-15 minutes, the transmission is much more smooth and I don't have the problem. Also, the problem was much worse for the first few miles. However, I DO occassionally have the grind, even when the tranny is warm. I have decided that it is related to the FORCE used to change gears. If I shift gently, I don't seem to get any grind at all, even when shifting rapidly, and even near the redline.

However, if I get excited (say when playing or ..., well, you get the idea I think that I shift with more force and I will get the grind. For example, a couple of nights ago, I had been driving for about an hour. I took off from a light aggressively, shifted at redline, and COMPLETELY missed second due to the grind. After that, I payed attention to shifting gently and never had another grind.

I am fairly convinced if you shift too forcefully you will get the grind, no matter whether your car is warm or cold. However, this is still speculation on my part and I am continuing to test. In the mean time, I am calling my dealer to let them know that I am not happy with the shifting in case it gets worse. Also, I recommend shifting rapidly but GENTLY. Placing my hand on top of the shifter as recommended in another thread seems to help also. This would prevent me from putting too much force on the shifter.

Good luck!

Mark

I also have the 2nd gear notchiness when cold. After it warms up, it goes away. I consider this normal for the gearbox.

Never had mine pop out of any gear.
