Is the '04 spare the same as earlier models or different?

Is the '04 spare the same as earlier models or different?
One of the things deterring me from getting larger rims at some point was the idea of losing the spare. Does the '04 have a different spare to compensate for the 17" wheels, or do they assume that the size difference is negligble?
On another note, how do those of you with aftermarket wheels prepare for a possible flat, or do you just carry a AAA card?

I just took my spare out of the my car (weight savings) and it's a 16" wheel/tire. I pay for AAA and I'm not quite sure the OE 17" wheel/tire combo is going to fit in the trunk if I had to take if off in the event of a flat anyway. You'd have to leave the trunk open or leave the thing on the side of the road?
