ok bump for infomation

just bought an 04 but i don't see XM on the head unit - the goal is to use my GEX-P900XM and somehow wire it to the wires that are already run above the fuel tank..

any way to tell if all the new head units are X-M ready?? and are there any plugs that can be used to conect my x-m receiver to the factory plug (that should be in the trunk right?)

OK... to clarify....

"XM-Ready" means the head unit is capable of plugging in to an XM tuner box, control it, select channels, display song and artist information, etc. But you still need to buy that tuner box and plug it in. Sometimes, "ready" means the car has an antenna in it already, but not the S.

The tuner box that is controlled by the head unit is DIFFERENT from a plug and play unit, like the SkyFi or Roady. These are all-in-one units that select channels, display the song info, and contain the receiver. They hook up to any existing headunit using either AUX/PIE etc., a cassette adapter thingie, or an FM modulator.

XM has a wireless FM modulator that is just OK, for use with the plug n play units. It takes the audio from the XM unit and broadcasts it onto an unused FM frequency, which you tune in. This is probably the worst sound quality.

XM also has Delphi make a *hard wired* FM modulator, which also powers the plug n play units. With this unit, once it senses that you've hit the power on the XM receiver, the regular FM antenna is cut off and switches the HU to receive a direct, hard wired feed on an FM frequency. This sounds as good as your headunit's FM reception can possibly sound. It's like being plugged in to an FM station. I have it in my pre-S car with an Alpine headunit and a SkyFi and it sounds very good.

I've just posted on the electronics forum a few ideas about how to save bucks and improve the XM install in the S:

Well, nobody, I suppose. But..... , if you're driving from New York to LA, that cd collection might start getting old. XM, or something like it, has the potential of much more variety (depends on how big your cd collection is, how big is the S2000's trunk? ) and you don't have to worry about swapping disks. To each their own!

As I've said before, I'm just not quite ready to "pay" to listen to the radio! I'm sure that'll change somewhere alone the way.

Steve R.

Thanks again guys

Chug-A-Bug, I'm familiar with the x-m set up as i brought mine from my 01 to my 04 - The goal is to use my existing head unit and the GEX-P900XM I have to the wires that are already prewired in the 04.

so i think i need some type of adapter that will connect the factory wires to the sat receiver

Bass,

both pie and logjam have stuff that can help you. I emailed 'em both a few days ago about this precise question.

PIE told me that the HON03/PC-PIOX will allow a Pioneer XM tuner to integrate into the 04 factory headunit.

Logjam suggested this would work as well:
