i was wonder what size tires would be needed to leave about a 1" gap on the stock 16" rims w/o lowering the car. does this pose any changes to performance other than a more cushioned ride?

You'd have to change to series 60 or 65 tires to do that. You probably would not be able to find tires with anything like the performance of the S-02s, and the increased sidewall flex during cornering would degrade the car's handling even if you could. IMO, not a great idea.

ricosuave,

Ooooohhh man...don't up size the profile of the tire!

1. It will look like you are running on donuts!
2. You are going to loose some acceleration.

Just drop the car bro!

just jack up the back of the car and get some cragers for it, then some louvers for the rear window, a bright yellow or chrome differential cover (if only) and a calvin peeing on a ford and you will have the ultimate import NOVA/Chevelle

Remember if you do get taller tires that there is not very much room up front on turning..you will smack the tire into the bumper....also..only 1/2 of the increase is going above the axle....

Good point. But you can get around this by going to 70-series tires and running them at 15 psi.

Roy, you literally made me laugh out loud! ( I've had a tough 2 days)
Sorry to hear you aren't going to Asheville. You'll have to come out to the left coast s2kdays next year and drive my car with Janet. Heck, I'd probably even let your daughter drive, you guys are so nice

1) more rotational mass = worse braking as well as acceleration performance

2) speedo will be off

3) odometer will be off

4) visually not appealing

5) springs are easier and cheaper.
