I didn't read anything above, i just want to say that i did used to ALWAYS get 205 miles in 10.5 gallons of gas (i can't resist the urge of driving "spirited") and i always thought it was BS to put 280-300 or even 350 miles per tank then on day i've decided to go to the keys and i drove like a GRANDMA (still i got a $210 ticked that day but is other story) but anyways i managed to put 310miles, 310 MILES per tank .. i think is amazing, just don't Vtec and drive slow and voila, civic like miles

As I have always understood higher octane fuel burns more effectivetly and therfore improves gas milage and power. The only reson I say this is look at all the gas addatives in the car stores. Add octane to you fuel = more power and more milage or at least that is the way I have always understood it. Just like in my dd 99eclipse spyder. Usually run 87 but every now and then will put in 93 and it runs like a new for that tank of fuel. Please correct me if I am wrong and in which I most likely am but like I said that is the way I understand it to be.

Hi spiffy, yes you like many others including myself at one point in time have been lead to belive this misconception of what octane ratings mean and what effect they have on the combustion engine, and market hype such as these octane boosters you speak of have done nothing to correct the misconception, althoe they do surve a purpose, it is not the purpose you beilive it is for however. The sole purpose of higher octane fuel is to keep an engine from detonation, period. I will give some examples of the type of engines that need high octane fuel to run without detonation. Forced induction engines , N/A engines with high compresion ratio's and diesels. Remeber deisel fuel is extremly low burning because these engines build so much compession its not even comparible to a regular engine. They produce so much compression in fact that they don't even need spark plugs, the act of the engine compressing the fuel ignights it. If it was running a regular 92 octane fuel the engine would blow. These engines can run on corn oil remeber, how combustable is this stuff if you were to hold a match to it? So if they could put an octain rating on diesel it woud have to be about 150. As a rule an engine with 9to1 compression ratio can safley run on 87 octane with out burning a hole in your piston or detonation in other words. A compession ratio of 11to 1 such as the s2000 can run safely on 91 octane. This is the basis for my earlier coments on 92 octane or higher in the s2000. Effectivly we could add aproxametly another point to 12to1 compession on the s2000 to boot compression with out problems with 92 and this would give more power. We are spending money on extra octane that is not needed and with the slower burn of the octane it is hurting perfomance and leaving bult up carbon of un burnt fuel in our cars. with my explination I hope you can see why now. You want to run the lowest octane possible with out detonation to get the best performance. Does all this make sense to you? let me know if you have any more questions

in our books it says to run 91 octane cuz thats the highest octane rating we can get in California. i wonder what it says in the owners manual of the s2000 in japan or any cars in japan that suppose to take high octane rating

whats the lowers octane rating or (RON) available in japan?

got this from another site

( RON Octane Rating x 0.95 = AKI Octane Rating )
(98 RON Octane x 0.95 = 93.1 AKI Octane (US measure)
(100 RON Octane x 0.95 = 95 AKI Octane (US measure)

So, as you can see the 93 or 94 octane fuel we are all paying an arm and a leg for is actually quite comparable to the higher octane fuels found in Europe and Japan. The people whom have to worry about low octane rating are our friends out west in places like California that are subjected to substandard 91 octane.
91 AKI Octane (US measure) = 95.5 RON Octane

I guess for some, you have to unlearn something before you can learn anything new.

For a possibly easy fix attempt. I did a search for "rough idling" due to my S2k doing strange RPM drops when returning to idle.
I found a thread about putting a nylon wire tie around the plug from the MASS air sensor plug (located on the front of the engine on top of the aluminum intake header).
Right on top. The forum had a few good pics, but I lost the link. Try that.
My MPG went up by at least 20% and I get no more smoke when V-Tec'ing.
Worked like gangbusters. Hope it does for you.
