That's awesome!

I had a chance to pick up a '65 S600 a couple years ago. The motor was super clean and it ran great. I was fresh out of uni and was a little short on funds, by the time I got working and called the guy back it was sold...

The S500/S600/S800 are a true Honda Classic. I believe that only the S800 was sold in the U.S. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The specs that I have are:
S500 531cc 44hp 8,500rpm
S600 606cc 57hp 8,500rpm
S800 791cc 70hp 8,000rpm
I *knew* the S800 redline was around 7k or 8k, just as I said in my earlier post. I guess I'm one of the few people here who has actually seen and driven one of the cars, but it's been nearly 30 years and details like the exact redline are hard to be sure about (and my memory isn't what it was 30 years ago either ).

Honda never sold any s cars in America even though they planned to do so with the S800M, but by the time they had developed it, the emission standards here were too strict. Also, all of the s car had a chain drives except for the final few hundred of the s800 built, they had a live rear axle. At the VERY end of the s800 production some were built with front disc brakes. The s600 and s800 were both offered in coupe form as well. But, the s500 is really where the s car legend began. Here is a good website run by an s car owner.

The S800 I drove in Mississippi was a coupe, and had the chain drive, but I can't remember whether it had disk brakes. I seem to remember it having drums all round, but I'm not really sure. LOL, it was a LONG time ago. I do have a very clear memory of the beautiful little engine, the way the car drove and sounded, and the funky chain drive. The cars had a conventional (but tiny) solid axle, like an old Ford or Chevy, but it was mounted up in front of the rear wheels, and instead of driving the wheels, it drove sprockets. The sprockets drove the chains that drove the wheels. It looked to me as if you could change the gearing by simply changing sprockets, the way you do on a bike.

Funny story I guess ... I saw the car for the first time just three days after buying a new 850 Spider. Stopped to look it over and immediately fell in love with the thing. While I was looking the owner came out and asked me if I'd like to drive the car. (LOL, dumb question. ) I'd been driving around for several minutes before I realized that he was trying to sell the car and had mistaken me for a potential buyer. My bad. The sad thing is that the guy was asking exactly what I'd just paid for the 850, and if I'd seen the Honda three days earlier I'd have bought it instead.

I never even connected the S2000 to the S800 I'd liked so much until I drove an S2000, and then I realized that I was being offered a second chance to own a great little Honda sports car. I just wish my S2000 was as small and light as that little S800. The little thing was a real gem.

No.
I was going to the Air Force Tech School in Biloxi at the time. Me and my 850 Spider were still there when Camille hit, so that will give you some feel for how long ago it was.

We live in Georgia now.

Wow, that's crazy how the engines sound almost identical.

S600 - 1960's & almost 100HP/liter FTW!
