Default 2.2L....Why ruin a classic?

With all the recent debate over the S2200, or whatever they are going to call it. I started to wonder,

I still don't know if the rumors are true about a 2.2 litre S2200, but agree with you. What Honda has here is similar to the Porsche 911 or their own NSX. Just make subtle changes over the years and keep it's original style and performance. Just like a good song writer writes songs for themselves and not for their fans, Honda should build their S for the ability to please themselves and not be taken in to what the public wants. Just my opinion.

911's have come in 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6 and 3.8 liter versions. (I think, I'm not an expert.) The NSX has 3.0 and 3.2 versions. The original S cars by Honda came in 600 and 800cc versions.

Seems to me that going from a 2.0 to a 2.2 is perfectly in keeping with our cars' heritage.

First of all, if you're quoting Bieg's articles you should check with him to see if it's ok. He purposely deleted those articles from this site out of spite. It was a petty thing to do but we should respect his wishes with regard to how and where he wants his works displayed. Secondly, given that we haven't heard anything about a weight increase in the MY2004 S2K, there's no basis to suggest that the increase in displacement in the engine has anything to do with offsetting weight gains. Third, it IS how fast the car is. Granted the S2K isn't the fastest car on the planet but if it didn't have some oomph we all might as well own Miatas. Fourth, it IS how much it costs. One of the things that makes the S2K unique is it's affordability. I'll tell you what. If Ferrari starts selling their cars for 30k I'm dumping my S2K and getting one.

At the end of the day do I care that they increased displacement? At this point not really. It's not enough to make me trade my car in and if they had to reduce the redline as some have suggested then I'd need to see where VTEC kicks in and what not before I make a judgement. It may be that the VTEC range is reduced which could make the car less fun on the racetrack, and that I wouldn't like. In any case, I'm reserving judgement until I see the final product.

The S500 and S600 were classics in their own right. I'm glad Honda decided to create another one in the S2K instead of just reissueing the originals. If they do it again with a 2.2 that would be fine with me too.

Not to start a flame war or argument.

Bieg's wonderful article was posted in public forum and I gave him credit.

All this speculation has incited many heated debates, and doubt in potential, and current owners. The way I see it is that there is always room for change, and advances in engineering. Sometimes there is a demand to satisfy the public, and that becomes a burden to enthusiasts, but Honda is also a business, and should be able to jump into the races. I do believe that some of their engines are the best, but without improvement the I-Vtec would have never been developed, and the RSX would not get a new styling, and a bigger engine like the new SI hatchbacks too. One thing to remember also is that Honda sells the most cars in some classes so they need to stay competitive, and if that means re-designing then lets just wait, and see what happens.

Assuming that they go through, and actually have all these changes then who cares? Current owners will have the original motor that was offered and this motor is not so weak so that is not a bad thing. Just think about how ZC motors continue to be swapped and all the other motors like the torque-less B16 and the B18, B18C, B18C5, H22, and B20. These would be obsolete to some people, but to others they are motors that are classics, and that over time have proven themselves.

Lets just enjoy what this car brings to us now, and what it can bring to us in the future as owners, and enthusiasts. If it becomes a frenzy of fashion, and public criticism to change then you will know that it is time to move on.

I guess you don't remember when 911s were 2.0 liter (66-69), 2.2 liter (70-72) or 2.4 liter (73-74..)
