Back to the topic, I would be concerned buying a car from someone that did not know much about it. I would be worried that the car had not been properly maintained.

This might not be as good of a deal as you think. I would get a mechanic to look at it.

I don't see why this is such a hard concept for some here to understand?

Have any of you driven an E46 M3?

Interesting thread....funny story to add:

My boss's boss was in town not too long ago. He pokes his head in my office and asks if he can test drive my "hot-rod". I toss him the keys. 20 min later he returns with a shaken look on his face and I knew right away what happened. He thought he may have damaged my engine when the fuel-cutoff kicked in at 5800. He immediately turned around and parked in my stall. When I explained 3-bar rule he was relieved. Now when I see him on occasion, we get a laugh out of it.

It's scenarios like this that Honda designed this for.

I always wait for 3 bars before hammering on it. July it can take 2 city blocks. January (in Chicago) it will take a couple miles.

So, is it your recommendation to take it up to 6k RPM when it's below 3 bars every chance you can?

I didn't say to NOT drive, I said it's better to wait if you're going to try and go into VTEC. You need to go back and re-read what I said.

Back to the real issue, the other owner does not know what he's talking about.

I figured that is what you meant and I stated it earlier. Is just that your first post wasn't very clear about it.

ThaWyze1,

If everything else about the car checks out, I wouldn't read too much into the fact that the owner didn't know about the fuel cutoff when cold. These features are not all that common, and most people don't read the owner's manual (unless they specifically need to find out something) or hang out on S2Ki. If I didn't spend so much time browsing S2Ki, I wouldn't know jack about my car, either.

honda606,

You seem to take excellent care of your car, and that's commendable. Some of us use and take car of our cars differently. I personally drive mine on short 1-2 miles trips frequently, and VTEC it as soon as 3 bars shows up. Will this have a detrimental effect in the long term? Possibly, and possibly not...no one can say for sure right now. Until hard evidence is presented, then there isn't much to argue. All that can really be said is that we treat out cars differently.

That having been said, do I personally feel that your car will last longer than mine because of how you treat it? Yes. I think the extra precautions you take do make a difference to some extent. To what extent, I don't know...could be small, could be big. The point is, I'm not worried about it. I use my car as I wish, and I will live with the consequences. The S2000 is a very unique car. It's loved by automotive enthusiasts, and is priced very accessibly. Thus, it will draw buyers who have the means to purchase other vehicles and save it for limited use, as well as those who don't and just daily drive it (myself). I think that accounts for a lot of the conflicting opinions we see here.
