2002 3rd gear notch?
I have posted this before and I think it is a cheap and easy fix - it worked in my 01. Just change the fluid with clean OEM fluid. I did it at about 4,000 miles and from then on - no more notchy feel. It did have a bit in very cold weather but went away as soon as the tranny warmed up. At 22,000 (and 3 fluid changes) it is gone under all conditions. Something I have noticed is the shifts are all easier and smoother at higher speeds. If you follow the the shift suggestions in the owners manual - it shifts like a 75 MG. At higher shift points (matching revs) it is a joy!
I have 02 with 14000 miles.
My tranny has been notchy since the day 1. No grinds just notchy when I go from 1-2 and 2-3rd.
It doesn't matter whether the engine is hot or cold.
Every now and then 2-3 is silky smooth though........
I have complained to the dealer on 3 occasions and I was told that the 'notchiness' was NORMAL since S2k tranny has very short throws
I should changed the tranny fluid and see if that helps.

On my last visit to the dealer to have the alarm put in, I mentioned the notchy 3rd gear problem to them. One of the mechanics jumped into the driver seat and the two of us took it for a few laps around the block. I showed him how to create the notchy feel and he definitely noticed what I was talking about. He contacted Honda Technicians and was told, as expected, that this is normal for the 2002 S2k (and previous models I'm guessing). I was actually surprised that he had not heard about it yet since it seems to be a standard 'feature' on every S2k that comes out of the factory. An annoying flaw on an otherwise perfect car!
I picked up my car 3 months ago. When driving off the dealer's lot, the first thing I noticed was the clunking feeling when moving from 2nd to 3rd, and I thought ... oh no ... bad transmission. The problem goes away when the transmission is fully warmed up.
Fortunately, I gave it some time and now after 3000 miles of careful rev-matched shifting, the problem has completely disappeared, even when the transmission is cold. Of course, the transmission is not as smooth when it is cold as compared to when it is warm, but there is certainly no more weird feeling when shifting from any gear to any gear.
However, I do have a completely different problem ... The transmission seems to be louder for me between 3.5-4k rpm. It is not a lot louder, just a tad difference in the tonal quality but it seems like at that rpm range, the sound resonants with some other parts of the car. The sound has not changed much since I got the car. Does anyone experience something similar?

I've been driving the car for over a month now. Ever since this thread started, I really paid attention to the 3rd gear shift. I think I'm getting used to it. I just got back from a drive and I think this transmission is a dream to shift. It really doesn't effect drive feel or anything. The gear still clicks into place.
