Default 2004 2.2 Paving way for type R

Havent been here for a while and this may have been said already...many times... but If the stories are true about a stroked 2.2 for next year, do you think this is Honda paving the way for a type R.
e.g.

Standard 2.2 : 240bhp, much as it is now, lower rev limit etc.
Type R 2.2 with more power than std 2.2

Im sure Honda can get more out of the 2.2 than the 2.0 without reliability issues.

The 2.0 is pretty well tuned so they make a tamer 2.2 so they can bump the power up at a later date...

Just a thought.

It's an interesting thought. It had no crossed my mind, but it makes sense. It woudl be cool since they are sort of neutering the S2000 if they made an all out type-r version to compensate?

Who knows?

I just don't think there's much more to get out of our engines as long as they are NA. That goes for the 2.2 also. I'd like to see a 2.2 with lowered compression, beefed up internals and a nice turbo or supercharger setup pushing 350 hp. All of this with a factory warranty of course.

While the 2.2 has more displacement, it has a lower redline, and the revs is what made the power on the S. It peaked at 8300 RPM and stayed there until 8400. The 2.2 has more mass and thus, the components would need to be lightened to rev higher. Lightening them usually means sacrificing reliability, unless you get into exotic metals, which push the price up.

I highly doubt a Type R version for the S2000. If Honda was planning on bringing the R version out for the S2000, it would have been released already. What Honda might do is addd the Factory Performance package. This was written up in a car mag a few months back. It included stiffer suspension, wheels, and slotted rotors. I can definately see this version comming out with all the talk of a more refined car for 2004 with softer suspension. With FP, Honda can broaden their market by keeping existing hard-core enthusiasts into getting the FP and a more refined version for the average buyer.
